Ask what a home EV charger costs and most websites hand you a suspiciously confident number. Here is the honest version: there is no fixed national price for a home chargepoint, because a charger is an electrical installation rather than an appliance purchase, and the electrical work varies house by house. Any single figure you see online is somebody’s average across very different jobs, priced before anyone had seen a fuse board. What a guide genuinely can do is show you what you are paying for, which factors move the price up or down, how the grant arithmetic works in 2026, and how to read a quote so that nobody pads yours.
What you are actually paying for
Two things: the kit, and the job of installing it properly. The job is the part most cost articles skip.
The kit is the wallbox itself. The unit we fit most often is the EnSmart SmartBee-M — a 7kW smart charger with built-in residual-current protection, an IP65 weatherproof rating and a 2-year manufacturer warranty as listed by its UK distributor; the published specification lives on our EnSmart page. One thing you should never pay a premium for is the word “smart”: every new home chargepoint sold in Great Britain has been required to have smart functionality since 30 June 2022 under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. Scheduling, app control and off-peak defaults are the legal baseline, not an upgrade.
The job is a dedicated circuit run from your consumer unit to the charger, with the appropriate protective devices, a suitable earthing arrangement, the unit mounted, commissioned, tested and connected to your WiFi — plus the paperwork: electrical certification for the work and notification to your local electricity network operator (the DNO), which is the installer’s responsibility, not yours. The seven things that move the price
When two neighbours get different quotes for the same charger, the difference is almost always one of these:
- The cable route. A charger on the garage wall a few metres from the consumer unit is the cheapest version of the job. A consumer unit at the front of the house and a parking space at the back means a longer run, more containment, and more labour.
- Where the charger lives. A detached garage or a carport away from the house can need groundworks — trenching and ducting for the cable — which changes a straightforward install into a two-part job.
- The condition of your consumer unit. A modern unit with a spare way keeps things tidy. An older board with no spare capacity may need work before a new high-demand circuit can be added safely, and that appears as its own line on the quote.
- Your main fuse and supply. A 7kW charger adds a significant continuous load. UK Power Networks — the network operator for London, the South East and the East of England — says it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 amps up to 80 or 100 amps, and notes that where an installer has applied to connect the device you may not need a fuse upgrade at all. If your supply turns out to be looped — shared with your neighbour’s property — the network has to re-plan the work with both households, and there may be a charge for it. None of this should be discovered on installation day; it is what the survey is for.
- Tethered or socketed. A tethered unit has its cable permanently attached; a socketed one takes your own cable. Pricing differs between the versions, and so does day-to-day convenience — we cover the trade-off honestly at the survey.
- The earthing arrangement. Chargepoints have specific earthing requirements, and how your home meets them depends on the existing installation. Modern chargers with built-in protection have made this tidier than it used to be, but it still has to be checked, not assumed.
- Three-phase ambitions. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply that most UK houses do not have, and converting a domestic supply is a significant network job with a cost to match. The grant arithmetic in 2026
Grant support still exists, but it is narrower than the headlines suggest — and the numbers changed this year.
If you rent your home, or you own and live in a flat, the EV chargepoint grant covers 75% of the purchase and installation cost up to £500 per socket, provided the property has private off-street or allocated parking. That cap rose from £350 on 1 April 2026, so any page still quoting £350 is out of date. Worked through: a £600 installation attracts £450 of grant and costs you £150; from roughly £667 upwards the grant sits at its £500 ceiling and you pay the remainder. A parallel scheme exists for residential landlords.
If your only parking is on-street, there is a newer route: up to £500 towards a chargepoint installed together with an approved cross-pavement solution — a gully that carries the cable safely under the pavement — subject to your council’s rules on the works.
If you own and live in a house with a driveway, there is no grant, and budgeting for the full cost is the honest position. Both live schemes run until 31 March 2027. The VAT position — different from solar
Worth knowing when you are comparing quotes: the 0% VAT that applies to residential solar panel and battery storage installation in Great Britain until 31 March 2027 comes from HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, and home EV chargepoints are not on that qualifying list. So a solar quote and a charger quote are not taxed the same way, and a bundled quote should show the treatment of each part. Ask for VAT as a visible line — a transparent installer will not mind.
What it costs to run once it’s on the wall
The installation is a one-off; the electricity is forever, and it is where home charging earns its keep. Under the Ofgem price cap for July to September 2026 the average unit rate is 26.11p per kWh — at that rate, filling a 60kWh battery from near-empty works out around £15.70 of electricity (that is arithmetic on the average capped rate; your tariff will differ). For scale, Ofgem’s typical-household figure for electricity consumption is 2,500kWh a year, and home charging sits on top of whatever your house already uses — which is why the tariff you charge on can matter more over a year than the price of the unit on the wall. Off-peak EV tariffs price overnight units well below the average rate, and a smart charger schedules your charging into those hours automatically.
There is a second lever. If you have solar panels — or you are considering them — surplus daytime generation can be diverted into the car instead of being exported for pennies, which turns bright afternoons into miles. How to compare quotes without being padded
Three habits protect you. First, insist on an itemised quote — unit, circuit, cable route, consumer unit work, certification, notification, VAT, and any grant shown before and after. A single-line price is not cheaper; it is just hiding its assumptions. Second, be wary of any firm figure quoted before someone has surveyed your home or at least seen photographs of your fuse board and parking. Third, check who is doing the electrical work: this is a notifiable job, and the installer’s registration matters more than their brochure. And treat an unusually cheap headline price with the same suspicion as an expensive one — the missing money is usually hiding in an extras column you meet later.
