The council has institutional weight behind the agenda too — it declared a climate emergency on 18 June 2019, is working towards carbon-neutral operations by 2030, and reports progress through annual action plans. The scheme now trades as Switch Together and runs in rounds — its Mole Valley page said it was not open in the area when we checked on 18 October 2026 — so check what is currently open before relying on it. Registering is free and commits you to nothing, and comparing its offer against an independent quote is a sensible way to decide — we are happy to be that comparison.

It can. Dorking sits directly beneath Box Hill in the Surrey Hills National Landscape — designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958, with planning status equivalent to a National Park. Roof-mounted solar on a house usually remains permitted development even on designated land, but the rules are applied more tightly there, and the boundary itself is under review: Natural England's formal notice period on proposed Surrey Hills extensions ran from 21 November 2025 to 14 January 2026. If your home sits in the villages around the town — Westhumble, Westcott, Brockham — check the current maps rather than assuming you are inside or outside the line. A proper survey should confirm the position either way.

The most honest local benchmark comes from Dorking's own community energy scene rather than a sales pitch. Dorking Solar Group was co-founded in 2015 to encourage local homes and businesses into solar PV, and one co-founder's 1930s Dorking semi — a 3kW, 12-panel array fitted in 2016 — generates about 2,800 kWh of electricity a year. That is a 2016 system, so treat it as a reference point rather than a ceiling — but we will not promise your figure until your roof has been surveyed, because orientation, pitch and shading move the number far more than the postcode does. With 58% of Mole Valley homes at EPC band D or below, pairing panels with basic efficiency work is often the right order of jobs.

For a draughty older house near the High Street, loft insulation and draught-proofing can be the cheaper first pound; for a post-war semi in Goodwyns or Chart Downs the fabric is usually sound and solar is the bigger lever. A survey looks at both, and where fabric work would do more than extra panels, that is what we will say.
