Why solar works in Hampshire
Hampshire sits on the brightest edge of Britain. Met Office regional data puts the sunniest part of the mainland along the south coast of England, at more than 1,750 hours of sunshine a year — and long-term averages for Southampton come in around 1,700 hours, comfortably clear of the UK's roughly 1,400. For a solar array, that regional advantage compounds every single year of a panel's 25–30 year working life.
Hampshire's householders haven't waited to act on it. When Hampshire County Council ran its Solar Together group-buying rounds, the county clocked up more than 28,400 panels installed through that one scheme alone (the council's own figure, August 2024). The council itself declared a climate emergency in July 2019 and works to a carbon-neutral-by-2050 target for the county; on the latest count, Hampshire's annual emissions have fallen by just over half since 2005. Rooftop solar is one of the few parts of that curve a household controls directly.
The housing tells you where the opportunity is. Basingstoke grew from around 16,000 people in 1961 to about 75,000 by 1981 under the London overspill agreement — over 107,000 at the last census — and those expansion-era estates have exactly what installers like: broad, simple roof planes with little ornament. Winchester's historic core is the opposite case, dense with listed buildings and conservation streets that need a more careful design. And out in the rural west and the New Forest fringes, plenty of homes heat with oil or LPG because the gas grid never arrived — across Great Britain roughly 15% of homes are off mains gas — and for those households, generating and storing your own electricity does the most work of all.
One more honest data point: homes built since 2012 have a median energy efficiency score of 84 (ONS) — already band B. If you're in a newer Whiteley or Picket Twenty house, solar is less about rescuing a leaky building and more about cutting the running cost of an efficient one, particularly once an EV lands on the driveway.

Do I need planning permission in the New Forest or the South Downs?
Mostly no. Hampshire is unusual in containing parts of two national parks — the New Forest (designated 2005) and the western end of the South Downs, which begins at Winchester — but roof-mounted domestic solar within set limits is normally permitted development even inside them. The consistent exceptions: listed buildings always need listed building consent, panels in conservation areas can’t go on a wall facing a highway, and any Article 4 direction on your street overrides the defaults. Inside the parks, the national park authority handles planning rather than the district council. We check the position for your address as part of the survey.
My home is off the gas grid — is solar worth more to me?
Often, yes. Off-grid homes running on oil, LPG or electric heating typically face higher and more volatile running costs than mains-gas households, so every kilowatt-hour you generate displaces more expensive energy. Pairing panels with a battery is usually the right call in rural Hampshire — it lets an empty daytime house bank its generation for the evening. Do I need to wait for a Solar Together Hampshire round to open?
No. Solar Together is a council-endorsed group-buying scheme that runs in periodic rounds, and it has put tens of thousands of panels on Hampshire roofs — but it’s one route, not the only one. Is solar still worth it on a newer, already-efficient home?
It can be — but for different reasons, and we’ll be straight about that. A post-2012 home is already cheap to heat, so panels won’t transform your gas bill; what they do is cut the electricity you buy, earn export income on your surplus through the Smart Export Guarantee, and slash the per-mile cost of an EV charged at home. For an efficient house with an EV or daytime occupancy the case is strong. For a small, efficient, all-day-empty house with no EV, it’s weaker — and if that’s your situation, we’ll say so in the survey rather than talk you past it.
