Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes. Solar panels still generate electricity in cloudy conditions, just at a reduced output compared to direct sunlight.
How long does installation take?
Most residential solar installations are completed within 1–2 days, depending on the system size and property type.
Will I need planning permission?
In most cases, solar panel installations fall under permitted development and do not require planning permission. We'll confirm this during your survey.
How long do solar panels last?
Solar panels are designed to last 25–30 years, with many systems continuing to perform well beyond that timeframe.
What happens if I produce more energy than I use?
Excess energy can be stored in a battery (if installed) or exported back to the grid for potential financial returns.
Getting installed: your home and your roof
Do I need scaffolding for a solar panel installation?
Yes, in almost all cases — safe roof access is a legal requirement under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and scaffolding is the standard way to provide it. It usually goes up a day or two before your installation and comes down once the system has been commissioned. Your quote should state clearly whether scaffolding is included, and it is worth checking this when comparing installers, because scaffold hire added later can change the price noticeably. On a straightforward two-storey house the scaffold covers the working elevation only, not the whole property. If access is unusual — a steep drive, shared access, a third storey — mention it at the survey stage so the scaffold plan and the price are right first time.
Will solar panels damage my roof?
A properly designed installation should not damage your roof. Panels sit on rails fixed to the rafters with brackets that tuck beneath the tiles or slates, so the roof covering stays weathertight. MCS installation standards require the installer to check that your roof structure can carry the additional load before any work starts, and a good survey will pick up fragile tiles, worn felt or structural concerns first. If your roof is close to needing re-covering, it is usually cheaper to deal with that before the panels go on rather than lifting the array later. A handful of tiles may be adjusted or replaced during fitting — that is normal. What you should expect at handover is a weathertight roof and fixings installed to the mounting manufacturer's specification.
What size solar system does my home need?
Most UK homes are fitted with systems between 3.5kWp and 6kWp — typically eight to fourteen panels, depending on panel wattage and roof space. The right size depends on three things: how much electricity you use (Ofgem's typical household figure is now 2,500kWh a year, though many homes use considerably more), how much unshaded roof you have facing somewhere between east and west, and whether you plan to add a battery or an EV charger later. Bigger is not automatically better — a system sized far beyond your usage exports most of its output at a lower rate than you pay for imports. A proper survey measures your roof, looks at your actual bills and recommends a size with the reasoning shown, not just a price.
Living with your system
What maintenance do solar panels need?
Very little. Solar panels have no moving parts, and at the pitch of a typical UK roof, rainfall keeps them reasonably clean on its own — the Energy Saving Trust describes solar PV as needing little maintenance. It is sensible to glance at your monitoring app now and then: a sustained drop in generation that does not match the weather is the main sign something needs attention. An occasional professional clean can help if soiling is visible — bird droppings, lichen, or dust from nearby trees and fields. The component most likely to need work during the system’s life is the inverter rather than the panels themselves, which is covered in the next answer.
Should I have bird-proofing fitted with my panels?
It is optional, but worth considering if pigeons are active in your area. The gap between the panels and the roof is sheltered, warm and safe from predators, which makes it an attractive nesting spot. Nesting birds bring droppings that soil the panels and reduce output, debris that can block airflow, and occasionally pecked cabling. Bird-proofing is a mesh fitted around the perimeter of the array, clipped to the panel frames so nothing is drilled through your roof. Having it fitted at installation time is straightforward; retrofitting later means paying for scaffolding or roof access all over again, which usually costs more than the mesh itself. Ask at the survey stage whether your property is in an area where it is worth doing.
What is an inverter, and how long does it last?
The inverter converts the DC electricity your panels generate into the AC electricity your home and the grid use — every solar system has one, and it works all day, every day. Typical manufacturer warranties on inverters run from around 5 to 12 years depending on the brand and model, and hybrid inverters (which also manage a battery) sit in the same range. Because the panels themselves are designed to last 25 to 30 years, it is realistic to plan for the possibility of one inverter replacement during the system’s lifetime. Your monitoring app usually flags inverter faults early. When comparing quotes, check the inverter warranty length in writing rather than assuming it matches the panels — the two are covered separately.
Batteries and getting paid for your power
Do I need solar panels to make a battery worthwhile?
No — a battery can work with or without solar panels. Alongside panels, it stores surplus daytime generation for the evening, so you buy fewer units from the grid at the standard rate — an average of 26.11p per kWh under the July to September 2026 price cap — instead of exporting them for less. Without panels, a battery can still save money on a smart time-of-use tariff: it charges overnight when rates are cheapest and runs your home through the expensive peak hours. Standalone battery installations have also qualified for 0% VAT since February 2024, the same as batteries fitted with solar. Which route makes sense depends on your tariff and usage pattern — the survey should show you the arithmetic for both before you decide anything.
How do export payments work under the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is the Ofgem-administered arrangement that pays you for electricity you export to the grid. Licensed suppliers with 150,000 or more domestic customers must offer a tariff, but the rate is theirs to set — anything above zero — so shopping around matters. Rates in mid-2026 range from a few pence to 15p or more per kWh, with some conditional tariffs paying over 20p; Ofgem’s data shows exporting households earned an average of 13p per kWh in 2024–25. To register you need your MCS certificate, which your installer provides at handover, and a smart meter capable of half-hourly export readings. You do not have to use the same supplier for your imports and your exports.
Paperwork, permissions and VAT
Do I need permission from my electricity network to install solar?
You do not need to arrange anything yourself, but your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — the company that runs the wires in your area, separate from your supplier — must be told about any generation connected to the grid. The rules, set by the Energy Networks Association, come in two forms. Systems up to 3.68kW per phase fall under G98: they can be installed first and notified within 28 days of commissioning. Larger systems fall under G99 and need the DNO’s approval before installation starts, which can add lead time to bigger projects. Submitting the right paperwork is the installer’s job as part of the MCS process, so a certified installer handles both routes and tells you which applies to your system.
How much VAT will I pay on solar panels or a battery?
None at the moment. Installing energy-saving materials in residential properties in Great Britain — including solar panels, and battery storage whether fitted with panels or on its own — carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, under HMRC’s VAT notice 708/6. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to revert to the reduced rate of 5%, not the full 20%. The zero rate covers the whole installed job: equipment, labour and scaffolding billed together by your installer. It does not apply to equipment you buy separately and fit yourself. If you are weighing up timing, the current window is a meaningful saving on a typical system compared with the position after March 2027.
Choosing an installer
What accreditations should a solar installer have?
Three matter most for UK households, and they do different jobs. MCS — the Microgeneration Certification Scheme — is the quality mark for small-scale renewables: it certifies that the installation meets defined standards, and you will need the MCS certificate to register for Smart Export Guarantee payments. HIES is a Chartered Trading Standards Institute-approved consumer code for home energy products: through it, deposits are protected (up to 25% of the contract value, capped at £5,000, for 120 days) and insurance-backed guarantees of two to ten years stand behind your written guarantee if an installer stops trading. NAPIT operates competent person schemes recognised under the Building Regulations, so registered installers can self-certify the electrical work. Home Comfort Enterprises holds all three: HIES membership, NAPIT registration and MCS certification.
EV charging at home
What do I need before a home EV charger can be installed?
Off-street parking — a driveway or an allocated space — is the main practical requirement, and it is also a condition of the current grants. The charger needs its own dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, and since June 2022 every home chargepoint sold in Great Britain must have smart functionality built in, so charging can be scheduled for cheaper off-peak hours. Your installer notifies the network operator and self-certifies the electrical work under a competent person scheme. On grants: owners of single-occupancy houses are no longer eligible, but the EV chargepoint grant for flat owner-occupiers and renters pays 75% of the cost up to £500 per socket — raised from £350 on 1 April 2026 — and runs until 31 March 2027.
