Honest answer: it depends on your roof, your usage and the system size — which is why we
quote from a survey rather than a postcode. But the national picture gives you a sensible
starting point.
The Energy Saving Trust puts the average cost of a typical 3.5 kWp home solar system at
around £6,100 installed. A system that size generates over 3,000 kWh a year — more than the
roughly 2,700 kWh a year the Energy Saving Trust uses as its medium-use assumption behind
these figures (Ofgem's separate "typical household" figure is 2,500 kWh) — though you'll
still buy some grid power because generation and usage don't always line up. For a typical three-bedroom
home, the Energy Saving Trust estimates annual savings of roughly £818 to £953 once Smart
Export Guarantee payments are included (based on July 2026 fuel prices), with the system
typically paying for itself in 10–12 years.
Two things help the maths at the moment. Solar installations are zero-rated for VAT — the
0% rate on energy-saving materials runs until 31 March 2027, after which it reverts to 5%.
And panel prices have fallen a long way over the past decade while electricity prices have
risen, which is what's shortened payback periods.
