Solar on Farnham's housing
South Farnham shows why local knowledge matters. Great Austins is a garden suburb built between 1903 and 1930, much of it by local architect Harold Falkner in Queen Anne and Arts & Crafts styles, and it has been a conservation area since 1993 with its own Waverley appraisal — generous roof slopes, but placement rules to respect. The town centre has been a conservation area since 1970, and its conservation-area appraisal counted 388 listed buildings in the centre; Wrecclesham followed in 1973. What Waverley Borough Council is doing
Waverley Borough Council declared a climate emergency on 18 September 2019 and has committed to being a carbon-neutral council by 2030 — a target covering the council's own operations, with a zero-carbon borough still an aspiration it is developing. Its Carbon Neutrality Action Plan measured the borough's overall footprint at 577 ktCO2e in 2015 and notes the council itself accounts for only around 1% of that — the plan's own argument for why household action, including rooftop solar, carries most of the weight. On the planning side, the Climate Change and Sustainability SPD, adopted 18 October 2022, is a material consideration in decisions and guides how new development addresses energy, including solar.
Two practical threads for homeowners. Surrey County Council runs a group-buying scheme for solar PV and battery storage — launched as Solar Together Surrey in May 2021, now rebranding as Switch Together — whose 2025 round issued tailored recommendations from 29 July 2025, with installations planned by the end of March 2026. And Waverley has form on its own stock: around 450 council homes have solar PV, 59 more were upgraded (including solar) under SHDF Wave 2.2, and just over £2m of Warm Homes funding is targeting roughly 270 further homes.
What solar costs on a Farnham home
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: a typical domestic system is around 4.5 kWp — roughly around 12 panels over 20 to 30m² of roof — and costs around £7,600 installed. Two things move that number for everyone. Residential installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. When we'd tell you not to fit solar in Farnham
A persistently shaded roof, a slope that faces mostly north, a listed building where consent will not carry the fixings, or a home whose daytime usage is so low that almost everything would be exported at a supplier-set rate — in those cases we will say so at the survey rather than sell you a system that under-delivers.
