Battery storage — Hampshire
Battery Storage Petersfield
Home batteries for Petersfield homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Petersfield comes with one local fact that shapes everything else: the whole town sits inside the South Downs National Park, so the National Park Authority, not East Hampshire District Council alone, is the planning authority. For a battery fitted indoors that rarely matters; for anything fixed to the outside of a building in The Square or on a listed house, it does. Most batteries here will sit alongside panels, so start with what solar panels in Petersfield would generate on your roof, then decide whether storage adds enough.
The district is already well used to solar at every scale. DESNZ records about 7,356 solar PV installations across East Hampshire, with 65.71 MW of capacity, at the end of 2025, a count that includes larger sites as well as rooftops. DVLA counts 4,982 privately kept plug-in vehicles in the district at the end of June 2026, up from 3,541 a year earlier. Our main battery storage guide explains the products and sizing; below is what is particular to GU31 and GU32.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Petersfield:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Petersfield makes about 506 kWh in June but about 139 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Petersfield is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

How a home battery gets fitted in Petersfield
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Your usage, not a guess
We look at when your Petersfield home uses power, especially evenings, and your tariff, because that, not the sunniest month, decides the battery size.
- Step 2
Sizing and siting
Where the unit can go (garage, utility room or an outside wall, as the manufacturer allows), whether it pairs with existing panels, and a written, itemised quote.
- Step 3
Installation and notification
Fitting and commissioning, with the battery notified to or approved by Southern Electric Power Distribution depending on its size. Backup in a power cut only if it is designed in.
- Step 4
Settings and handover
Charge and discharge set up around your tariff, the app explained, and the warranty documents in your hand.
Where a battery fits in Petersfield's homes
Petersfield's 6,859 households are spread unusually evenly at Census 2021: 29.7% in detached houses, 23.6% in semis, 23.0% in terraces and 17.9% in purpose-built flats. In the detached and semi-detached homes of estates such as Herne Farm and Bell Hill, a garage, utility room or an inside wall near the consumer unit is usually the tidiest place for a battery. A loft is seldom ideal, because access for servicing is awkward and the temperature swings, and the manufacturer's installation instructions decide what is acceptable. The terraced streets nearer the centre often have no side access, so the battery goes inside, with the cable route through the house planned at the survey.
Tenure keeps the decision with the occupier for most: 40.5% own outright, 26.8% with a mortgage and 1.6% are in shared ownership, about 69% in all. Private renters (16.9%) need their landlord's agreement, and flat owners need the freeholder's. Heritage is the other check. The Square is a conservation area with its own adopted appraisal, one of 43 in East Hampshire, and the district holds more than 1,630 listed buildings. Keep the battery indoors or on a rear wall out of view, and ask the National Park Authority before fixing anything to a street-facing elevation or a listed building. PeCAN, the town's own climate charity, also gives free, impartial home-energy advice if you want a second opinion.
What a Petersfield roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Petersfield itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,128 kWh a year in total
- 506 kWh in June and 500 kWh in July
- 139 kWh in December and 162 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Petersfield
Petersfield is on SSEN's network rather than UK Power Networks': the town centre sits in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. Under G98, a type-tested system rated up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified to SSEN before commissioning or within 28 days of it. Above that, a G99 application must be approved before work starts, and a 4 kW inverter, at 17.39 A, is just over the line. SSEN says it aims to respond to small-generation fast-track applications within 10 working days. Your installer submits the paperwork either way.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, however full it is, so that it cannot feed power into a line that engineers may be working on. If you live out towards Steep, Sheet or Buriton and want certain circuits to stay on during a cut, backup has to be designed in from the start, with an inverter that supports it and a way to isolate the house from the grid. It costs more, and we will tell you plainly whether it earns its place in your design.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Petersfield
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Petersfield battery questions
Does the South Downs National Park change anything for a battery in Petersfield?
For a battery fitted inside your home, usually not, because nothing changes on the outside of the building. Where it matters is anything fixed externally, especially on a street-facing wall in The Square conservation area or on a listed building: the National Park Authority is the planning authority for the whole town, and its guidance is to check before work starts. We plan indoor or rear-wall positions first for exactly that reason.
Can I fit a battery in a Petersfield flat?
Possibly. Purpose-built flats are 17.9% of Petersfield's homes (Census 2021). The freeholder or managing agent must agree to anything fixed to the building, and a private tenant (16.9% of households) needs the landlord's consent too. The flat also needs a position that meets the manufacturer's installation instructions, with a cable route to the consumer unit; if there is none, we will say so.
Will a battery keep my Petersfield home running in a power cut?
Not unless backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery switches off when SSEN's network goes down, to protect engineers working on the lines. A backup design uses an inverter that supports it and a way to isolate your house from the grid, and it costs more. We will price it as a separate line if you want it.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery?
Your installer does. Petersfield is in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. Systems up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) are notified under G98 before commissioning or within 28 days of it; larger systems need a G99 application approved before work starts. SSEN says it aims to answer small-generation fast-track applications within 10 working days.
