EV Charger Installation Aldershot
Home EV chargers for Aldershot driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Aldershot covers two kinds of street: the older semis and terraces of North Town, West End and Manor Park, and the new homes at Wellesley on former Garrison land. DVLA counts 2,201 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Rushmoor at the end of June 2026, up from 1,491 a year earlier. Rushmoor's all-keeper total is far higher, but most of those are company registrations, so the private figure is the one that reflects households. Our home EV charger guide covers the kit and grants; this page covers Aldershot's homes and network.
We fit EnSmart's SmartBee-M, a 7 kW smart charger. Since 30 June 2022 every home chargepoint sold in Great Britain must be able to schedule charging, so the car fills in an off-peak window without you thinking about it. With a compatible setup it can also take daytime surplus from solar panels in Aldershot; DESNZ records about 1,998 solar PV installations of all sizes across Rushmoor at the end of 2025. To keep that surplus for the evening, see battery storage in Aldershot.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Aldershot:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Aldershot is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 2,201 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Rushmoor (2026 Q2), up from 1,491 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Aldershot
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Supply and parking check
Your main fuse, consumer unit and earthing, and where you park in Aldershot: a driveway or garage, or an on-street space that needs the council's say-so.
- Step 2
A written quote
Charger position, cable route and any fuse or supply work, itemised. A 7 kW charger draws about 32 A, so the survey checks the supply before anything is promised.
- Step 3
Installation
Fitting, testing and smart-charging set-up, with Southern Electric Power Distribution told about the charger where the rules require it.
- Step 4
Handover
Off-peak and solar-matched charging explained, the app set up with you, and the certificates and warranty left with you.
Where a charger goes in Aldershot's homes
Rushmoor is a borough of semis: 32.1% of households lived in one at the 2021 Census, against 16.5% detached, 23.5% terraced and 23.2% in purpose-built flats (ONS TS044). A semi in Aldershot Park or Rowhill with a drive is the straightforward case: the SmartBee-M, IP65-rated for outdoor mounting, goes on the wall nearest the car on its own circuit. At Wellesley, where up to 3,850 homes have consent, check what the developer fitted and whether your bay is allocated before ordering. A terrace in North Town or West End with on-street parking is the hard case. Hampshire County Council's guidance says it does not currently permit cable gullies or cross-pavement channels and cannot give written approval for trailing a cable over the footway; it has won funding to investigate channels and will publish updates.
That leaves the government's on-street grant, which needs an approved cross-pavement solution, with no channel to pair with in Aldershot for now. For flats, a leaseholder needs the freeholder's consent, and the 21.5% of Rushmoor households renting privately at the 2021 Census need the landlord's (TS054). Renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street or allocated parking can claim the OZEV grant of 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket; owner-occupiers of houses get no grant, as that scheme closed in April 2022. In the Aldershot West and Manor Park conservation areas, check with Rushmoor before a charger goes on a front wall. Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Aldershot
Aldershot is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network, with the town-centre point about 5.5 km from the nearest UK Power Networks area. SSEN completed a £5.6 million upgrade of the town's substation switchgear in February 2023, serving 61,000 customers, and named electric vehicles among the low-carbon demand it has to carry. Your installer notifies SSEN of every new chargepoint. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously, and main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A. In an older North Town house we check the fuse rating, earthing and consumer unit first; load management, which trims the charger while the house is busy, usually avoids a supply upgrade.
For solar charging, PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing Aldershot array at about 482 kWh in June, roughly 16.1 kWh a day on our arithmetic, and about 137 kWh in December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day. With a compatible setup, summer surplus the house does not use can go into the car; in winter there is little to spare, and charging moves to the off-peak window. Panels or a battery are notified to SSEN separately: under G98 up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), and above that a G99 approval is needed before work starts.
Can a Aldershot roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Aldershot for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 482 kWh in June and about 137 kWh in December, 3,970 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.4 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Aldershot
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Aldershot home arrives itemised after a survey.

Aldershot EV charger questions
Can I get a charger at an Aldershot terrace with on-street parking?
Not through a pavement channel for now. Hampshire County Council's guidance says it does not currently permit cable gullies or cross-pavement channels, and that it cannot give written approval for trailing a charging cable over the footway. It has won grant funding to look at channels and says it will publish updates. If your North Town or West End terrace has a rear parking space or garage you own, a charger may still work there; we check the cable route at the survey.
Can the Aldershot network cope with a home charger?
SSEN, the network operator for Aldershot, finished a £5.6 million upgrade of the town's substation switchgear in February 2023, serving 61,000 customers, and named electric vehicles among the demand it has to carry. At the house end, a 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously and main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A, so the survey checks your fuse and consumer unit and fits load management where the headroom is tight. Your installer notifies SSEN of the new chargepoint.
Can I add a charger to a Wellesley new-build?
Usually, with two checks first. Find out what the developer has already fitted, and whether your parking bay is allocated to your home. If you rent or own a flat with an allocated bay, the OZEV grant of 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, may apply, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage. A modern consumer unit usually makes the circuit straightforward.
Can solar charge my car in Aldershot in winter?
Only a little. PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing Aldershot array at about 137 kWh for the whole of December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day on our arithmetic, and the house uses most of that. In June the figure is about 16.1 kWh a day, enough for a compatible setup to divert real surplus into the car. In winter, off-peak scheduling does the work.
