Battery Storage Aldershot
Home batteries for Aldershot homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Aldershot has to suit two towns at once: the Victorian and Edwardian streets of North Town, West End and Manor Park, and the new homes at Wellesley on former Garrison land, where up to 3,850 homes have consent. In either, a home battery does one job: it stores daytime generation from solar panels in Aldershot, or cheaper overnight electricity if your tariff has a cheap rate, and uses it in the evening. Where it goes, and whether it pays, depends on the house in GU11 or GU12, which is what this page is about.
Rushmoor's figures frame it. DESNZ records about 1,998 solar PV installations of all sizes across Rushmoor at the end of 2025, with 10.34 MW of capacity. DVLA counts 2,201 privately kept plug-in vehicles in the borough, up from 1,491 a year earlier; Rushmoor's all-keeper total is far higher, but most of those are company registrations, so the private figure is the one that reflects households. Our main battery storage guide covers products and sizing; below is what applies to Aldershot's homes and its SSEN network.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Aldershot:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Aldershot makes about 482 kWh in June but about 137 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Aldershot is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Aldershot's homes
Rushmoor counted 40,822 dwellings in March 2021, and 79% are privately owned, either lived in by their owners or rented out privately. Owners decide where a battery goes; private tenants need the landlord's agreement first. The council's housing strategy shows houses in the borough average a SAP score of 62 against 70 for flats, so the older houses that stand to gain most from solar and storage are also the leakiest. In a semi or detached house in Aldershot Park or Rowhill, a garage wall or utility room near the consumer unit is the usual spot. Lofts are the obvious idea and rarely the right one, because summer heat, servicing access and fire-safety guidance on where storage may go all count against them.
A mid-terrace in North Town or West End has no side access, so the battery and inverter go inside, under the stairs or in a kitchen cupboard, with the cable route planned at survey. Flats need the freeholder's or landlord's consent, and a communal hallway is not a place for a battery. Four of Rushmoor's nine conservation areas cover parts of Aldershot (Aldershot Military Town, Aldershot West, Cargate and Manor Park), with Article 4 directions in some: keep the unit indoors or on a rear wall out of public view, and on a listed building speak to Rushmoor's planning team before fixing anything to historic fabric. At Wellesley, check what the developer has already fitted.
What a Aldershot roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Aldershot itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,970 kWh a year in total
- 482 kWh in June and 486 kWh in July
- 137 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Aldershot
Aldershot is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the town-centre point is about 5.5 km from the nearest UK Power Networks area. SSEN finished a £5.6 million upgrade of the town's substation switchgear in February 2023, serving 61,000 customers, and named low-carbon technology such as electric vehicles among the demand it must carry. A battery joins that network through its inverter, and the inverter's rating sets the paperwork: a GU11 or GU12 system at or below 3.68 kW (16 A per phase) in total goes through G98, a notice to SSEN at commissioning or within 28 days of it, while anything bigger goes through G99 and waits for SSEN's approval before work starts, with SSEN aiming to answer small fast-track cases within 10 working days.
None of that network work keeps a standard home battery running in a power cut. A grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, panels included, so nothing feeds cables engineers may be repairing; backup has to be designed in, with a backup-capable inverter and selected circuits wired to it. On a Wellesley new-build the consumer unit is recent and the wiring easier to extend; in an older North Town house we check the board first, because backup wiring starts there. Tell us at survey if outage cover matters and we will say whether it is worth it for your home.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Aldershot
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Aldershot battery questions
Can I fit a battery in an Aldershot terrace?
Usually, indoors. A mid-terrace in North Town or West End has no side wall to use, so the battery and inverter go in an understairs cupboard or a kitchen utility space near the consumer unit, with the cable route agreed at survey. In the conservation areas, including Aldershot West and Manor Park, keeping the unit inside also keeps it out of public view. With houses in Rushmoor averaging a SAP score of 62, we will also tell you if insulation would do more for your bills first.
Will a battery keep my Aldershot home running in a power cut?
Not unless backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, panels included, so nothing feeds back into cables engineers may be repairing. SSEN's 2023 switchgear upgrade in Aldershot strengthened the local network, but it does not change how a home battery behaves in an outage. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter and selected circuits wired to stay live. If that matters to you, say so at the survey and we will design and price it separately.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery in Aldershot?
Your installer does. Aldershot is in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. If the whole system's output is 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) or less, SSEN is notified under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days of it; larger systems need a G99 application approved before any work starts, and SSEN says it aims to answer small fast-track applications within 10 working days. Your energy supplier is separate and only matters for an export tariff.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Rushmoor?
It can help with the house, not the car. DVLA records 2,201 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Rushmoor at the end of June 2026, up from 1,491 a year earlier. Most owners charge overnight on a cheaper rate; the battery's job is the house's evening use. In December, PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing Aldershot array at about 137 kWh for the whole month, roughly 4.4 kWh a day on our arithmetic, so the battery then mostly stores cheaper overnight electricity. We size it from your evening usage and tariff.
