Battery Storage Fleet
Home batteries for Fleet homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Fleet starts from an unusually house-heavy town. Summing the 2021 Census for Fleet's three wards, Central, East and West, gives 45.4% of households in detached houses, so most enquiries come from a home with a garage or side wall where a battery fits easily. The bigger questions are how much evening use you have and whether backup matters. If the roof is still open, start with solar panels in Fleet; this page is about the battery: where it goes, how SSEN is told, and what it does in a power cut.
The network has been preparing for more of this. SSEN began a £5.2 million upgrade of underground cables around Fleet and Church Crookham in January 2024, serving about 48,000 local customers and sized for growth in electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar. DVLA records 4,111 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Hart at the end of June 2026, up from 3,038 a year earlier. Our battery storage guide covers products and sizing; below is the Fleet detail.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Fleet:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Fleet makes about 485 kWh in June but about 136 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Fleet is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Fleet's homes
In Fleet's three wards the 2021 Census counts 10,854 households: 45.4% detached, 19.7% semi-detached, 12.2% terraced and 20.2% in purpose-built flats, and 73.7% own their home. In the detached and semi-detached estates around Ancells Farm and Pondtail, an integral garage, utility room or side wall by the meter is the usual home for a battery, with a short cable run to the consumer unit. In the period houses of the 1880s grid of streets south-east of the centre, the meter may be in a front cupboard and the only practical space at the back, which the survey checks. Lofts are a fallback, because of summer heat and access.
Purpose-built flats are about a fifth of Fleet's households, and a battery there needs the freeholder's or management company's agreement; at Hartland Village, where 1,500 homes including apartments are being built on the former Pyestock site, check the estate rules too. North Fleet is a conservation area with an Article 4 direction on front boundaries: keep a battery indoors or on a rear or side wall, and for a listed building speak to Hart District Council before anything is fixed to it. Elvetham Heath, completed in 2008, is modern stock too, though it is its own ward and not in the three Fleet wards counted above.
What a Fleet roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Fleet itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,989 kWh a year in total
- 485 kWh in June and 488 kWh in July
- 136 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Fleet
Fleet sits in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution licence area, with the town centre about 10 km from the nearest other network, so SSEN is the operator that has to know about your battery, not UK Power Networks and not your supplier. Your installer notifies SSEN under G98 for a system rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), before commissioning or within 28 days after. Anything larger, such as a 5 kW hybrid inverter on a detached house in Ancells Farm, needs a G99 application approved before work starts; SSEN aims to answer small fast-track applications within 10 working days.
In a power cut a standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, by design, so it does not feed a network that SSEN's engineers expect to be dead. The cable upgrade around Fleet and Church Crookham does not change that. Backup has to be designed in from the start, with a backup-capable inverter or gateway and a separate circuit for the essentials, at extra cost. If you work from home in Fleet or need a freezer or medical equipment kept on, say so at the survey and we will price backup as a separate line.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Fleet
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Fleet battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Fleet flat?
Possibly, with permission. Purpose-built flats are 20.2% of households across Fleet's three wards (Census 2021), and a leaseholder needs the freeholder's or management company's written agreement before a battery goes in; a tenant needs the landlord's. In newer blocks and at Hartland Village, estate rules may also cover external equipment. Communal areas are rarely acceptable, so the options are a private garage, a private wall or nothing. Without panels, a battery only pays with a meaningful off-peak rate to charge from.
Will a battery keep my Fleet home running in a power cut?
Not unless backup is designed in, and the network upgrade does not change that. SSEN's £5.2 million cable work around Fleet and Church Crookham, begun in January 2024, strengthens the network, but a standard grid-tied battery still switches off when the grid fails, by design. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter or gateway and a separate circuit for the essentials, at extra cost, chosen before installation. Fleet's operator is SSEN Distribution (Southern Electric Power Distribution), the people to contact about a cut.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Hart?
It can be. DVLA counts 4,111 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Hart district (end of June 2026), up from 3,038 a year earlier. Most cars charge overnight on a cheaper rate where the tariff has one, and the battery covers the house's evening use. With 45.4% of Fleet's households in detached houses, there is often room for both a charger and a battery near the meter. On an estate home at Elvetham Heath or Hartland Village, check what the developer fitted before pricing a charger, which carries 20% VAT, unlike the battery.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery in Fleet?
Yes, and your installer does it. In Fleet the network operator is SSEN Distribution. A system rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days after; anything larger needs a G99 application approved before the work starts. SSEN aims to answer small fast-track applications within 10 working days, so allow for that in the timetable for a G99 battery job.
