Battery storage — Hampshire
Battery Storage Basingstoke
Home batteries for Basingstoke homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Basingstoke suits a town built largely in one long burst. The post-war expansion that raised Oakridge, Popley, South Ham, Brighton Hill and Hatch Warren left a stock dominated by houses rather than flats, which usually means a garage, a utility room or a side wall where a home battery can sit near the meter. A battery stores what solar panels in Basingstoke generate in the day and releases it in the evening, or charges on a cheaper overnight rate if your tariff has one, so it earns its place from how your RG21 to RG25 household uses power after dark.
The borough's figures run large. DESNZ records about 5,437 solar PV installations of all sizes across Basingstoke and Deane at the end of 2025, with 80.17 MW of capacity between them, a total that counts every scale of installation, not just house roofs. DVLA counts 6,203 privately kept plug-in vehicles in the borough, up from 4,382 a year earlier. Our main battery storage guide covers the products and sizing; this page covers where a battery goes in Basingstoke's homes, how SSEN's network handles it and the local questions we hear first.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Basingstoke:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Basingstoke makes about 488 kWh in June but about 136 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Basingstoke is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

How a home battery gets fitted in Basingstoke
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Your usage, not a guess
We look at when your Basingstoke home uses power, especially evenings, and your tariff, because that, not the sunniest month, decides the battery size.
- Step 2
Sizing and siting
Where the unit can go (garage, utility room or an outside wall, as the manufacturer allows), whether it pairs with existing panels, and a written, itemised quote.
- Step 3
Installation and notification
Fitting and commissioning, with the battery notified to or approved by Southern Electric Power Distribution depending on its size. Backup in a power cut only if it is designed in.
- Step 4
Settings and handover
Charge and discharge set up around your tariff, the app explained, and the warranty documents in your hand.
Where a battery fits in Basingstoke's homes
The EPC register puts Basingstoke's stock at roughly 30% detached, 28% semi-detached, 22% mid-terrace and 15% end-terrace, and at the 2021 Census 64.8% of the borough's households owned their home, 15.4% rented privately and 17.9% rented socially. That is a good hand for storage. Detached and semi-detached houses in Kempshott, Chineham or Hatch Warren usually offer a garage wall or utility room close to the consumer unit, and an end-terrace has an outside side wall for an inverter rated for outdoor mounting. Lofts tend to be the first idea and the worst fit: heat in summer, awkward servicing and fire-safety guidance on where storage may go all point elsewhere.
Mid-terraces, about a fifth of the stock, have no side access, so the battery and inverter go inside, in an understairs cupboard or a kitchen utility space, with the cable run to the meter planned at survey. Social tenants (17.9% of households) and private renters need the landlord's agreement before anything is fixed. In the Victorian and Edwardian streets of South View, Fairfields and Brookvale West, three of the borough's more than 40 conservation areas, keep the unit indoors or on a rear wall out of sight, and for a listed house talk to Basingstoke and Deane's planning team before anything is fixed to historic fabric. New homes at North Manydown, up to 3,520 with outline permission, are worth checking for what the builder has already fitted.
What a Basingstoke roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Basingstoke itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,023 kWh a year in total
- 488 kWh in June and 487 kWh in July
- 136 kWh in December and 157 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Basingstoke
Basingstoke sits well inside SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution licence area: the town-centre point is about 27 km from the nearest other network. A battery connects through an inverter and counts as generation. If the system's total output is 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) or less, the installer notifies SSEN under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days of it; above that, a G99 application must be approved before any work starts, and SSEN says it aims to answer small fast-track applications within 10 working days. Your installer submits the paperwork; you do not need to contact SSEN yourself.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery switches off with the grid, solar panels included, so nothing is fed into cables engineers may be repairing. That surprises people who assume a charged battery is a backup supply; it is not, unless backup was designed in, which means a backup-capable inverter and a small set of circuits wired to it. In a Basingstoke semi with a garage, that extra hardware usually fits beside the battery; in a mid-terrace it takes more cupboard space. If outage cover matters, say so at the survey, because it changes the design and the price, and we will tell you plainly whether it is worth it for your home.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Basingstoke
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Basingstoke battery questions
Where does a battery go in a Basingstoke mid-terrace?
Inside. Mid-terraces are about 22% of Basingstoke's stock on the EPC register, and with no side access there is no outside wall to use, so the battery and inverter usually go in an understairs cupboard or a kitchen utility space close to the consumer unit. The unit needs a dry, ventilated spot that is easy to reach for servicing, and the cable route to the meter is agreed at the survey before anything is drilled. We would not put one in a loft or in the escape route from upstairs. If there is genuinely no suitable space, we will say so.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery in Basingstoke?
Your installer does, not you. Basingstoke is in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. If the whole system's output is 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) or less, the installer notifies SSEN under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days of it. Larger systems need a G99 application approved before any work starts, and SSEN says it aims to answer small fast-track applications within 10 working days. Your energy supplier is a separate company and only comes in when you set up an export tariff.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Basingstoke and Deane?
It depends on when you charge. DVLA records 6,203 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the borough at the end of June 2026, up about 42% on a year earlier. Most owners charge overnight on a cheaper rate, which a battery does not improve; where a battery helps is covering the house's evening use. In summer a Basingstoke array has spare daytime output, but PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing system at about 136 kWh for the whole of December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day on our arithmetic, so winter solar will not charge a car and a battery. We size from your actual usage and tariff.
Will a battery keep my Basingstoke home running in a power cut?
Only if it is designed to. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, panels included. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter and selected circuits, such as the fridge, lights and router, wired to stay live, plus room for that hardware near the consumer unit, which is easier in a Basingstoke semi with a garage than in a mid-terrace. If outage cover matters to you, tell us at the survey; it is designed and priced as a separate line, never assumed.
