Air conditioning has quietly become a natural next step for solar homes — because a modern wall-mounted unit isn't the energy-hungry box people remember. It's a reversible air-to-air heat pump: one unit that cools your rooms in summer, heats them in the cooler months, and runs on the same electricity your panels generate. The solar logic is unusually neat. Your cooling demand peaks on hot, sunny afternoons — exactly the hours when solar panels are generating hardest — so an air-conditioned room can run largely on electricity you'd otherwise export for pennies. Add battery storage and a cheap overnight tariff, and the heating side of the same unit gets similar treatment in spring and autumn.
As with everything we fit, the advice comes before the sale: not every home needs air conditioning, and if it doesn't suit yours — the room, the wall, the way you use the house — we'll say so. Air conditioning is a heat pump — one unit, both directions
Here's the thing most people don't know about modern air conditioning: it's the same machine as a heat pump. The refrigerant circuit that pumps heat out of your room in July can run in reverse and pump heat into it in November — one wall-mounted unit, both directions. Don't take our word for it; take the tax authority's. HMRC's VAT guidance puts it plainly: "HMRC's understanding is that most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps" (VAT Notice 708/6). Manufacturer datasheets tell the same story — every current wall unit carries two efficiency ratings, SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating, on the same sheet.
One honest distinction, though. An air-to-air heat pump heats the air in a room, directly and quickly. It doesn't do radiators and it doesn't do hot water — that's the job of the "wet" air source heat pumps you've read about elsewhere. In practice, most owners use the heating side for fast, responsive warmth in the shoulder seasons and for individual rooms in winter, while the boiler carries on doing hot water. Also worth naming: everything on this page is about fixed systems — an outdoor unit and an indoor unit connected by refrigerant lines. A portable unit venting through a window gap is a different, far less efficient machine, and it doesn't qualify for the VAT relief either.
Single-split or multi-split?
Single-split — one room done properly. One outdoor condenser drives one indoor wall unit. It's the simplest, cheapest and most efficient way to condition the room you actually live in — usually a bedroom, a living room or the home office that bakes every afternoon. Typical wall units span roughly 2.0 to 7.1 kW of cooling capacity across the mainstream ranges (Panasonic's Etherea line, for instance, runs six models from 2.05 to 7.10 kW), and the survey's job is to size the unit to the room — the right number, not the biggest one.
Multi-split — several rooms, one outdoor unit. One outdoor unit drives two to five indoor units in different rooms (Daikin's Emura, as one example, supports up to five on a single condenser). Multi-split matters more than you'd think in England, because permitted development normally allows one outdoor unit per house — two if the house is detached — so putting three bedrooms on one condenser is often the difference between a planning application and not needing one. It also keeps the outside of the house tidy.
Which is right depends on how you use the house, and it's exactly the sort of thing the survey settles. Plenty of customers start with one room and add to it later — tell us your plans and we'll design for them, the same way we do when solar and an EV charger arrive in stages.
Running costs — and why solar changes the sums
Cooling efficiency is measured by SEER — seasonal energy efficiency ratio — and the arithmetic is friendly: a unit with a SEER of 7 delivers, averaged across a season, roughly seven kilowatt-hours of cooling for every kilowatt-hour of electricity it uses. The current flagship wall units publish SEER figures between about 8.5 and 10.5 (Toshiba's SHORAI Edge up to 8.6, Daikin's Emura 8.75, Mitsubishi Electric's MSZ-LN25 10.5, per their published data) — call it eight-plus units of cooling per unit of electricity at the top of the market. Heating is measured by SCOP, and the same units publish around 5.1–5.2: roughly five units of heat per unit of electricity, which is why a heat pump beats a plug-in electric heater so comfortably.
Those are lab-condition seasonal averages, and we won't pretend otherwise — real running cost depends on your tariff, your rooms, your settings and the weather. We're not going to invent a monthly figure here; pages that do are guessing. What we will do at the survey is the honest arithmetic for your case, on your tariff.
What we can say now is why solar changes the picture. The hours you most want cooling — hot, bright, still afternoons — are the hours your panels generate hardest. Run the air conditioning on your own generation and you're displacing export income of a few pence per unit rather than buying peak-rate electricity; on a sunny day the marginal cost of a cool room gets very small indeed. Add battery storage and the choreography extends: solar covers the daytime cooling directly, the battery soaks up the rest, and in the cooler months a cheap overnight window can pre-heat the rooms you use first. What good kit looks like (the benchmark for any quote)
We'd rather teach you the benchmark than recite a brand list. The current market-leading wall units — the likes of Daikin's Emura, Mitsubishi Electric's MSZ-LN, Panasonic's Etherea and Toshiba's SHORAI Edge — publish specifications that make a useful yardstick for judging any quote, ours included:
- A+++ energy rating in both cooling and heating on the flagship sizes (on the A+++ to D label scale) — per Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Toshiba's published UK data.
- Sound pressure from 19 dB(A) on the quietest indoor setting — a figure Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic all publish for their flagship wall units. That's quiet enough for a bedroom at night; the outdoor unit is the noisier half, which is a siting question, not a spec question.
- R32 refrigerant — the current standard across all four ranges.
- Built-in Wi-Fi and app control (Panasonic's Comfort Cloud, Toshiba's embedded Wi-Fi) so schedules and away-from-home control are standard, not extras.
- Air-quality extras on several ranges — Panasonic's nanoe X, Toshiba's Ultra-Pure PM2.5 filtration — worth having, not worth overpaying for.
If a quote is built on kit that falls well short of that benchmark, ask why. If someone quotes you a unit without measuring the room, ask harder. We'll confirm the specific manufacturers and models we're fitting at the quote stage, in writing, with the published datasheet figures alongside.
The F-Gas rules — one credential question every quote should survive
Fixed air conditioning contains fluorinated refrigerant gas, and the law on who may handle it is strict — usefully strict, from a homeowner's point of view. Two certificates have to exist behind any legal domestic installation:
The engineer. Anyone who installs, services or decommissions equipment containing F-gas must hold a personal F-Gas qualification (Category I or II covers domestic split systems, from awarding bodies such as City & Guilds, BESA and LCL Awards). GOV.UK's wording is blunt: "It is against the law to work with F gas if you do not have the correct qualifications."
The company. The business itself — "including sole traders", in GOV.UK's words — must separately hold company certification from an approved body: REFCOM, the F-Gas Register or Bureau Veritas. Again verbatim: "It is against the law to work with F gas if you don't have the correct certification." A fully qualified engineer working for an uncertificated company is still an illegal install.
So the single best question to ask anyone quoting for air conditioning — us included — is: show me the engineer's F-Gas qualification and the company's F-Gas certificate. A good installer won't blink. It's a better filter than any review score, because it's checkable.
What does installation involve?
A proper installation is a refrigeration and electrical job, not a bracket-hanging exercise. Here's the shape of it.

Survey first
We look at the rooms you want conditioned and size the heat and cooling load properly, then work out the practical bits: where the indoor unit sits, where the outdoor unit can go (aspect, airflow, drainage, distance from neighbours, and the permitted-development limits covered in the FAQs — including the extra checks if your home is listed or in a conservation area), the route for the refrigerant lines and condensate drain, and what your electrical supply needs. This is also where we'll tell you if air conditioning is the wrong answer for the room — it happens, and you'd rather hear it now.
- Step 2
Installation day
The indoor unit goes on the wall and the outdoor unit onto its brackets or base. Insulated refrigerant lines, the condensate drain and the cabling run between them in tidy trunking. Before any refrigerant flows, the system is pressure-tested and vacuumed — that's the craft step that separates a proper install from a cheap one — then commissioned and run in both heating and cooling modes.

Commissioning and handover
Wi-Fi and app control set up, schedules configured, controls demonstrated before we leave, paperwork provided. A straightforward single-split is typically a one-day job; multi-splits take longer. The survey will give you an honest schedule, not an optimistic one.
Air conditioning FAQs
Do I need planning permission — and what about noise?
For most houses in England, no — and the rules got notably friendlier in May 2025. Under permitted development (Class G of the GPDO, as amended from 29 May 2025), an air-conditioning outdoor unit no longer has to sit a metre from your boundary; the allowed unit size rose to 1.5 cubic metres; and detached houses may have two outdoor units (one for everyone else). Conditions still apply: the unit can’t go on a pitched roof, must sit at least a metre from the edge of a flat roof, and listed buildings and conservation areas carry extra restrictions — the survey checks all of this for your address. One catch worth knowing: the permitted-development right covers units that are not solely used for cooling — a reversible heat-and-cool unit can qualify; a cooling-only air conditioner needs a planning application. On noise: the leading indoor units run from 19 dB(A) sound pressure on their quietest setting per the manufacturers’ published specs — fine for a bedroom — and the outdoor unit is the half that needs thoughtful siting, which is a survey job we take seriously, neighbours included.
What’s the VAT position on air conditioning?
Better than most people expect, for now. Installing a permanently fixed air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027 — and HMRC’s own guidance (VAT Notice 708/6) states that most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, because they heat as well as cool. The conditions that matter: the unit must be permanently fixed (portable units don’t qualify) and the installation must be in residential accommodation. A fixed unit that can only cool isn’t a heat pump, so we’d treat it as standard-rated — one more reason the reversible units that dominate today’s market are the sensible buy. Your written quote will show the VAT treatment explicitly, so there’s nothing to decode.
What does air conditioning cost to run?
Honestly: it depends, and we won’t invent a monthly figure — any page that does is guessing at your tariff and your usage. What we can give you is the arithmetic. Cooling efficiency (SEER) on current flagship wall units runs from about 8.5 to 10.5 per the manufacturers’ data, meaning eight-plus kilowatt-hours of cooling per kilowatt-hour of electricity, averaged across a season. And if you have solar panels, the hours you most want cooling are the hours your panels generate most, so much of that electricity can be your own rather than bought at peak rates. At the survey we’ll run your numbers on your tariff — including whether the honest answer is that you don’t need a unit as big as you think.
Can it really heat my home too?
Yes — the same unit, running in reverse, and efficiently: flagship wall units publish heating SCOPs around 5.1–5.2, roughly five units of heat per unit of electricity. Two honest caveats. First, air-to-air means warm air: it heats rooms quickly and controllably, but it doesn’t do radiators or hot water, so your boiler keeps those jobs unless you plan otherwise. Second, on grants: since spring 2026 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does include £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump — but only where the system replaces fossil-fuel heating as your home’s primary heat source, with the boiler decommissioned and an MCS-certified installer applying on your behalf (England and Wales). A comfort-cooling unit installed alongside your existing gas boiler doesn’t attract it. Anyone dangling “£2,500 off your air con” at you is misreading the scheme — ask us and we’ll tell you straight whether the full replacement route could genuinely apply to you.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward single-split — one outdoor unit, one indoor unit, a sensible pipe run — is typically completed in a day. Multi-split systems serving several rooms take longer, usually a day or two more depending on how many indoor units and how the pipework runs. The survey is where you get a real schedule for your house rather than a generic promise; if your job needs two days, we’ll say two days.
