Battery storage — Bedfordshire
Battery Storage Dunstable
Home batteries for Dunstable homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Dunstable fits a more compact town than the district around it. In the Dunstable built-up area, the 2021 Census puts semi-detached houses at 34.0% of households and terraces at 22.8%, while detached houses are only 14.7%, about half Central Bedfordshire's district-wide share of 29.3%, and flats, maisonettes and apartments make up 28.4%. Where a battery goes therefore matters as much as what size it is. This page covers placement in Dunstable's homes, the UK Power Networks paperwork, and what a battery can and cannot do in a power cut.
Most batteries are fitted with panels, so start with our page on solar panels in Dunstable for the roof and the town's conservation areas; for the products and sizing, see our main battery storage guide. Across Central Bedfordshire, the council area that includes Dunstable and Houghton Regis, DVLA records about 10,751 privately kept plug-in vehicles at the end of June 2026, up from 7,376 a year earlier, so an electric car's overnight charging is increasingly part of the tariff a battery is planned around.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Dunstable:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Dunstable makes about 479 kWh in June but about 135 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Dunstable is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Dunstable's homes
Semis and terraces house more than half of Dunstable's households (56.8%, our arithmetic from the Census figures). In a semi the battery usually goes in a garage, a utility room or on the side wall near the meter; in a terrace with no side access it normally goes indoors, in a cupboard or under-stairs space close to the consumer unit. Lofts come last, used only where the manufacturer's instructions allow it and an engineer can reach the unit for servicing. ONS's median EPC score for existing houses is 64 in Dunstable Central and 65 in Dunstable East, both band D, so in those houses insulation often belongs in the same plan as storage.
Flats, maisonettes and apartments are 28.4% of Dunstable's households, and each needs the freeholder's or managing agent's written consent before a battery or its cabling goes on a shared wall. Renters need their landlord's agreement: 16.3% of Dunstable households rent privately and 15.8% from a social landlord, while 67.9% own (our arithmetic). In the Dunstable conservation area, and in Houghton Regis and Totternhoe, an indoor battery or a wall-mounted unit on a rear or side wall is the sensible choice. A listed building needs the council's view first, and Central Bedfordshire's postcode search shows whether your home is in a conservation area or near a listed building.
What a Dunstable roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Dunstable itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,962 kWh a year in total
- 479 kWh in June and 482 kWh in July
- 135 kWh in December and 154 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Dunstable
Central Dunstable sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area, so the paperwork for a battery here goes to UK Power Networks, whose area checker confirms any postcode in Dunstable, Houghton Regis or the villages. On NESO's boundaries the nearest other network is about 12.4 km from the town-centre point. Under G98, equipment up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified before commissioning or within 28 days after; a larger system needs G99 approval before work begins. UK Power Networks said in June 2024 that its installer platform lets customers get approval for up to 5 kW of solar and battery storage, above the industry-standard 3.68 kW, and its current page says an export under 5 kW, after any export limitation, is approved automatically.
Grid-tied batteries switch off in a power cut. Unless backup is designed in, a Dunstable home with a battery loses power exactly as it would without one; backup takes extra switching, usually for chosen circuits, and adds cost. Winter shrinks what it could offer anyway: PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing array in Dunstable at about 135 kWh in December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day (our arithmetic), so in a winter outage a backup battery has only its stored charge. Tell us at survey if you need backup, whether for a home office in Houghton Regis or equipment that must stay on, and we will say plainly whether it earns its cost.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Dunstable
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Dunstable battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Dunstable flat?
It is harder, but sometimes possible. Flats, maisonettes and apartments make up 28.4% of households in the Dunstable built-up area (Census 2021), and a leaseholder generally needs the freeholder's or managing agent's written consent before a battery or its cabling is fixed to a shared wall or run through a communal area; tenants need the landlord's agreement too. Inside the flat the unit needs a suitable wall near the consumer unit with room for servicing. Where it is not workable, we will tell you at survey.
Will a battery keep my Dunstable home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, so the house goes dark as it would without one. Backup switching, designed in at the start, can keep chosen circuits running, at extra cost. PVGIS estimates about 135 kWh in December from a 4 kWp south-facing array in Dunstable, roughly 4.4 kWh a day (our arithmetic), so winter backup depends on stored charge. Ofgem's reliability figures for UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area, which covers central Dunstable, are shown on this page.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Central Bedfordshire?
It can be, if your evenings are expensive. DVLA records about 10,751 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Central Bedfordshire at the end of June 2026, up from 7,376 a year earlier. Most home batteries are sized for a house's evening use rather than to fill a car, so the car usually charges overnight from the grid; the battery earns its place by storing that cheaper electricity, or daytime solar, for the evening. Remember the VAT difference: a residential battery installation is 0% until 31 March 2027, while a home EV chargepoint is standard-rated at 20% (HMRC Notice 708/6).
Can Central Bedfordshire's Warm Homes grant pay for a battery in Dunstable?
Only alongside solar panels, and only for eligible households. Central Bedfordshire Council runs its own Warm Homes: Local Grant allocation of £1,000,000 for 2025 to 2028, arranges the work itself, and lists solar panels among the improvements; the national guidance allows a battery only alongside solar PV. Households that qualify through their postcode are served first, and sign-ups through the eligibility checker will not be considered until towards the end of 2027 into 2028. ECO4, the other income-linked scheme, runs until 31 December 2026.
