Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Egham
Home batteries for Egham homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Egham usually means a semi-detached house. Semis are the town's biggest housing type at 35.8% of households in the 2021 Census, and in the Egham Town and Egham Hythe wards the figure is 40.4%. A semi typically has a side passage, a garage or a utility room where a battery can sit near the consumer unit. The other side of Egham is a large rented sector around Royal Holloway: in the two Englefield Green wards, 29.6% of households rent privately, and for them the first step is the landlord. See what solar panels in Egham would generate before sizing any storage.
Egham's winter is also worth knowing before you buy. PVGIS estimates that a 4 kWp south-facing array here makes about 138 kWh in December against about 491 kWh in June. A battery is sized for your evenings, and in winter much of its value comes from storing cheaper overnight electricity rather than solar. Our main battery storage guide sets out the products and how sizing works; below is what applies in Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green and Thorpe.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Egham:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Egham makes about 491 kWh in June but about 138 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Egham is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Egham's homes
The 2021 Census accommodation table for the Egham built-up area counts 35.8% of households in semi-detached houses, 21.5% detached, 19.0% terraced and 19.0% in purpose-built flats. In the two central wards, Egham Town and Egham Hythe, 40.4% of 5,861 households live in semis (ONS Census 2021, TS044). On a semi in Pooley Green or Thorpe Lea, the usual choices are the garage, a utility room, or a wall-mounted unit by the side passage, as close to the meter as possible. Terraces in Egham Hythe with no side access often mean an indoor spot under the stairs or near the consumer unit, if the manufacturer's rules allow it. A loft suits some units but not others.
Ownership is lower than in much of Surrey. In the Englefield Green East and West wards, 49.7% of 3,492 households own their home outright or with a mortgage, 29.6% rent privately and 19.4% rent socially (ONS Census 2021, TS054). A battery in a rented home, or in a flat at Magna Square or any other block, needs the landlord's or freeholder's agreement before a survey is worth booking. Three of Runnymede's conservation areas, Egham, Egham Hythe and Englefield Green, cover parts of the town; the Englefield Green boundary was revised on 1 December 2023. There, a battery inside a garage avoids most visual questions, and a wall-mounted unit belongs on a side or rear wall rather than a street-facing one.
What a Egham roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Egham itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,021 kWh a year in total
- 491 kWh in June and 494 kWh in July
- 138 kWh in December and 153 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Egham
The centre of Egham sits in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution licence area, so for most homes SSEN is the network operator that hears about a battery. If you live towards the edge of the town, it is worth checking your postcode with the network operator. The paperwork belongs to the installer. A type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) is notified under G98 within 28 days of commissioning. Anything above that, which includes a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A, needs a G99 application approved before work starts.
What a battery does not do on its own is keep an Egham home powered in a power cut. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid; backup has to be designed in, with the extra isolation hardware and a list of circuits to keep. In a rented home that is a landlord's decision as much as yours. For an owner of a semi in Thorpe or Englefield Green, we will set out what backup for a few essential circuits would add, and say plainly if it is not worth it.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Egham
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Egham battery questions
I rent near Royal Holloway. Can I have a battery fitted?
Only with your landlord's written agreement, because a battery is a fixed electrical installation. Private renting is common here: 29.6% of households in the Englefield Green wards at the 2021 Census. If your landlord is open to it, we survey the property and send them the proposal directly. Portable plug-in units are a different product and are not what this page covers.
Where would a battery go in an Egham semi?
Usually in the garage, a utility room, or on a side wall by the passage, close to the meter and consumer unit so the cable run is short. Semis make up 40.4% of households in the Egham Town and Egham Hythe wards (2021 Census), so this is the most common layout we see. Lofts suit some units but not others, depending on the manufacturer's temperature and access rules.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery in Egham?
Your installer does. Egham town centre is in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. Systems up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) are notified under G98 within 28 days of commissioning; anything larger needs a G99 application approved before work starts. If you live towards the edge of the town, check your postcode with the network operator.
Will a battery keep my Egham home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid for safety. Backup has to be designed in, with extra isolation hardware and a choice of which circuits to keep running. We price that separately so you can see what it adds.
