Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Guildford
Home batteries for Guildford homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Guildford usually starts with one question: how much of what your roof makes during the day could you use after dark? In a borough where two-thirds of the 55,762 households live in detached or semi-detached houses (Census 2021), most homes have somewhere sensible for a battery to go. If you have not looked at the roof yet, start with solar panels in Guildford, then come back here for the storage side.
This page keeps to what is local: where a battery physically goes in Guildford housing, from the Burpham and Merrow semis to the conservation-area terraces of Charlotteville; which network the town centre is on; and what the borough’s own figures say about solar and plug-in cars. Our main battery storage guide covers products and how sizing works, and if a battery would not pay its way in your home, we will tell you plainly.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Guildford:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Guildford makes about 486 kWh in June but about 130 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Guildford is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Guildford's homes
Guildford’s housing makes the garage-or-utility-room answer common: 33.5% of households live in detached houses and 32.6% in semis (ONS Census 2021, TS044). In the interwar and postwar belts of Burpham, Merrow, Stoughton and Boxgrove, an integral or side garage is usually the first place we look, because it keeps the unit away from living space and close to the consumer unit; a utility room comes next. A loft is not a default. Where a battery goes is a fire-safety decision made under the manufacturer’s installation manual and the BSI’s PAS 63100 standard, and an engineer has to be able to reach it for servicing.
The harder cases are the 13.6% of homes that are terraced and the 15.1% in purpose-built flats. A mid-terrace in Charlotteville with no side access and no garage may leave a rear external wall as the realistic spot, if the cable route works. Flats need the freeholder’s or managing agent’s consent before anything is fixed, and with 19.6% of the borough’s households renting privately (Census 2021, TS054), the landlord’s sign-off comes first for many. In the Onslow Village, St Catherine’s, Charlotteville & Warren Road and Town Centre conservation areas, keep any outdoor unit off the street-facing elevation and check with the council first; on a listed building, ask whether fixing a unit to the fabric needs listed building consent before anyone drills.
What a Guildford roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Guildford itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,974 kWh a year in total
- 486 kWh in June and 491 kWh in July
- 130 kWh in December and 152 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Guildford
Guildford town centre sits in UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence area. The town is close to the edge of that area, so if you live on the western side, towards Worplesdon and Normandy, check your own address with the Energy Networks Association’s ‘find my network operator’ postcode tool rather than assuming. Whichever operator it is, it is told about every battery: under the industry rule G98, equipment up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified by the installer before commissioning or within 28 days after it, while anything larger needs a G99 application approved before work starts. A 4 kW inverter, at 17.39 A, is already over the G98 line.
The part most people get wrong is the power cut. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid goes down, so a battery in a Merrow garage will not keep the lights on unless the system was designed with backup from the start: a backup-capable inverter or gateway, a dedicated backup circuit and the right switching. That costs more and is not always worth it, which is why we ask what you would actually want to run before quoting for it. If you already have panels on a Stoughton or Burpham roof, the battery is notified too, and the installer works out whether the property as a whole stays within G98 or moves into G99.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Guildford
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Guildford battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Guildford flat?
Sometimes, but consent comes first. 15.1% of Guildford borough households live in purpose-built flats (Census 2021, TS044), and most leases need the freeholder’s or managing agent’s written agreement before anything is fixed to the building or wired into the supply. If you rent, as 19.6% of households here do privately (TS054), the landlord decides. Where consent is given, the unit still needs a spot that meets the manufacturer’s manual and the PAS 63100 fire-safety standard, which a small flat may not have. We check both before quoting.
Will a battery keep my Guildford home running in a power cut?
Not unless it is designed to. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, so the house goes dark like the rest of the street. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter or gateway and a dedicated backup circuit, designed in from the start; Tesla, for example, says its Powerwall 3 provides no backup power in its non-backup configuration and needs a Backup Gateway 2 for it. Ofgem’s reliability figures for the South Eastern network are printed on this page so you can judge how often you would use backup.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Guildford?
It can be, but the car usually charges straight from an off-peak tariff rather than from the battery. DVLA counts 5,360 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Guildford borough at the end of June 2026, up from 4,116 a year earlier. If you have one, the battery’s job is the house’s evening load, and both share one supply: a 7.4 kW charger draws 32 A continuously, most homes have a 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse, and load management usually lets them live together without a supply upgrade.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in Guildford?
Your installer does it, not you. Guildford town centre is on UK Power Networks’ South Eastern network; on the western side, towards Worplesdon and Normandy, check your postcode with the Energy Networks Association’s tool first. Up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) the installer notifies under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days after; above that, a G99 application must be approved before work starts. Ask any installer, us included, which route your system needs.
