Battery Storage Hemel Hempstead
Home batteries for Hemel Hempstead homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Most of the battery storage Hemel Hempstead households ask us about would go into a terraced house or a flat rather than a large detached home, and that shapes the advice from the start. Across the town's thirteen wards, from Adeyfield and Bennetts End to Grovehill and Woodhall Farm, terraces and purpose-built flats together house six in ten households (our sum of the 2021 Census ward figures). If you are weighing panels as well, our solar panels in Hemel Hempstead page covers the roof; this page is about the battery: where it goes, who has to be told, and what it will and will not do.
A battery stores electricity, from your panels or from a cheaper overnight tariff, and releases it in the evening when you would otherwise buy from the grid. In Hemel that case is shaped by a few local figures: DVLA records nearly 5,000 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Dacorum, about a third more than a year earlier, and a 4 kWp south-facing roof in the town makes about three and a half times as much electricity in June as in December. Our main battery storage guide explains the products and how sizing works; the figures on this page are Hemel's own.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Hemel Hempstead:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Hemel Hempstead makes about 477 kWh in June but about 136 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Hemel Hempstead is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Hemel Hempstead's homes
On our own sum of the ONS ward figures, Hemel Hempstead's 38,368 households at the 2021 Census were 34.8% in terraced houses, 25.7% in purpose-built flats, 22.9% in semis and 13.7% in detached houses. In the town's semis and detached homes, a battery usually goes in an integral or attached garage or a utility room close to the consumer unit, which keeps cable runs short and the unit out of living space. A mid-terrace with no side access and no garage narrows the choice to an inside wall near the meter or an under-stair space, and the unit's size, ventilation needs and the manufacturer's installation conditions decide whether that works. Lofts are sometimes possible, but weight on the joists, temperature and safe access for servicing come first, and we check them rather than assume.
Ownership decides the rest. In the same thirteen wards, 26.7% of households rent from the council or a housing association and 15.4% rent privately, so for roughly four homes in ten a battery is the landlord's decision; in a block of flats the freeholder or managing agent must also agree before anything is fixed to a shared wall. Planning is the lighter question in Hemel: the Hemel Hempstead conservation area was designated on 7 October 1968, and Dacorum's published Article 4 list names streets in Berkhamsted, Tring and nearby villages but none in Hemel. A battery inside the house or garage changes nothing anyone can see; a unit on a street-facing wall in the conservation area is the one to talk to Dacorum about first, and works affecting a listed building's character need listed building consent.
What a Hemel Hempstead roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Hemel Hempstead itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,965 kWh a year in total
- 477 kWh in June and 485 kWh in July
- 136 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Hemel Hempstead
Central Hemel Hempstead sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area, and the paperwork for a battery in HP1, HP2 or HP3 goes to UKPN through your installer, not through you. A battery counts alongside any panels: UKPN describes its approvals in terms of "solar and battery storage" together. Under the industry rules, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days of it; anything larger needs a G99 application approved before work starts, and a 4 kW inverter, at 17.39 A, is already over that line. UKPN says it approves an application automatically where the maximum export, after any export limitation, is under 5 kW.
The point people most often get wrong is the power cut. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, so an ordinary system in Grovehill, Highfield or Leverstock Green goes off with the rest of the street, however full it is. Backup is possible, but it has to be designed in from the start: extra switching equipment that separates the home from the network, wall space for it near the meter, and a decision about which circuits it keeps running, such as the fridge, lighting or a boiler pump. If backup matters to you, say so at the survey, because it changes the kit, the wiring and the price, and we will tell you if it is not worth it for your home.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Hemel Hempstead
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Hemel Hempstead battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Hemel Hempstead flat?
Sometimes, but not on your own say-so. Purpose-built flats house 25.7% of households across Hemel Hempstead's 13 wards (our sum of the Census 2021 ward figures), and in almost every block the freeholder or managing agent must agree before anything is fixed to the building. Council and housing association tenants, 26.7% of Hemel households, need the landlord's agreement. If you own a leasehold flat, the practical questions are whether the lease allows it and whether there is an indoor wall near your meter with room for the unit. We will tell you plainly if it is not workable.
Will a battery keep my Hemel Hempstead home running in a power cut?
Not unless it is designed to. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, so an ordinary system in HP1, HP2 or HP3 goes off with the street, however full it is. Backup needs extra switching equipment and a choice of which circuits to keep running, and it has to be planned before installation. Central Hemel is on UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area, and Ofgem's reliability figures for that network are printed on this page so you can judge how much backup is worth to you.
Can the Warm Homes: Local Grant pay for a battery in Hemel Hempstead?
Only as part of a solar installation. The national scheme guidance funds batteries only alongside solar PV, and Dacorum's own list of measures, delivered with E.ON, names solar panels but not batteries. Eligible homes are owner-occupied or privately rented at EPC D to G and meet an income, benefit or postcode route, and every postcode on Dacorum's eligible list is in HP2 or HP3. Owner-occupiers have approved work paid in full; landlords may be asked to contribute 50%. E.ON's survey decides which measures fit.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in Hemel Hempstead?
Your installer does it for you. A system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days of it; a larger one needs a G99 application approved before work starts, and the battery counts alongside any panels. UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where the maximum export, after any export limitation, is under 5 kW, and that there is nothing to pay it unless your supply needs upgrading first.
