Battery Storage Maidenhead
Home batteries for Maidenhead homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Maidenhead fits a town of houses more than flats: at the 2021 Census, 31.1% of the 27,913 households in the built-up area lived in detached homes, 26.4% in semis and 15.9% in terraces. In Furze Platt, Cox Green and Pinkneys Green, that usually means a garage or utility room where a battery can sit beside the consumer unit. The centre is changing, with the Nicholson Quarter scheme approved for 755 homes, and those flats will raise different questions. Start with what solar panels in Maidenhead would generate on your roof.
Two-thirds of Maidenhead households own their home (66.1%), so most can make the decision themselves. The borough's Solar Together scheme, run with iChoosr, prices optional battery storage alongside panels, and an independent quote is a sensible comparison. Our main battery storage guide explains the products and how sizing works.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Maidenhead:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Maidenhead makes about 482 kWh in June but about 135 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Maidenhead is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Maidenhead's homes
The 2021 Census for the Maidenhead built-up area counts 31.1% of households in detached houses, 26.4% semi-detached, 15.9% terraced and 22.5% in purpose-built flats. 32.5% own outright, 33.6% have a mortgage, 20.1% rent privately and 12.8% rent socially (ONS Census 2021, TS044 and TS054). In the detached and semi-detached houses of Furze Platt, Cox Green and Holyport, the garage or a utility room near the meter is the usual home for a battery. Where a terraced house nearer the centre or at Boyn Hill has no side access, the unit may go indoors near the consumer unit, if the manufacturer allows. A loft works for some units, not others.
Flats are 22.5% of households now, and the Nicholson Quarter's 755 homes will add more in the centre. In a flat, a battery needs the freeholder's or managing agent's consent and a suitable location, usually a private garage or plant space. The fifth of households renting privately need their landlord's agreement first. Around ten of RBWM's 27 conservation areas are in or near Maidenhead, including All Saints at Boyn Hill, Castle Hill, Maidenhead Riverside, Bray Village and Cookham. On those streets, keep a battery inside a garage or the house where possible and any wall unit off the street front; listed buildings need the council's conservation team first.
What a Maidenhead roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Maidenhead itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,978 kWh a year in total
- 482 kWh in June and 483 kWh in July
- 135 kWh in December and 159 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Maidenhead
The centre of Maidenhead sits in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution licence area rather than UK Power Networks'. SSEN is the network operator your installer tells about a battery in SL6. Under G98, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) is notified within 28 days of commissioning. Anything above that, including a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A, needs a G99 application approved before work starts. SSEN says it aims to respond to small-generation applications within 10 working days.
A standard grid-tied battery shuts down in a power cut, whether it sits in a Cox Green garage or a Bray utility room. Keeping essential circuits running needs a system designed for backup from the outset, with extra isolation hardware and a separate supply for the circuits you choose. It adds cost, and we will show you how much before you decide, along with whether it is worth it for your home.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Southern Electric Power Distribution show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 51.2 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Maidenhead
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Maidenhead battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Maidenhead flat?
Only with the freeholder's or managing agent's consent, and usually somewhere outside the flat, such as a private garage. Flats are 22.5% of households in the Maidenhead built-up area (2021 Census), and the Nicholson Quarter's 755 homes will add more. Ask your managing agent first; we can then tell you whether there is a workable location.
Do I need to tell SSEN about a battery in Maidenhead?
Your installer does. Maidenhead town centre is in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution area. Systems up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) are notified under G98 within 28 days; larger ones need a G99 application approved before work starts. SSEN says it aims to respond to small-generation applications within 10 working days.
Will a battery keep my Maidenhead home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid. Backup needs extra isolation hardware and a separate circuit for essentials such as the fridge, lighting and boiler controls. We price it separately so you can decide.
Should I use Solar Together or get an independent battery quote?
You can do both. RBWM's Solar Together scheme, run with iChoosr, prices optional battery storage alongside panels, and registering carries no obligation. Compare battery capacity, inverter, warranty and workmanship line by line against an independent quote, and let the numbers decide.
