EV Charger Installation Hendon
Home EV chargers for Hendon driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Hendon is, for most households, a question for a landlord or a freeholder. In Hendon ward, 47.2% of households rent privately and 44.6% live in purpose-built flats, against 32.7% renting privately across Barnet borough (Census 2021). That makes Hendon one of the places where the government's chargepoint grant still matters, because it is aimed at renters and flat owners rather than at owners of houses. Our main EV charger page sets out the grant, charger speeds and smart charging in full.
The owners who can decide for themselves are mostly in the ward's semis, 20.4% of households, and detached houses, 12.8%, many of them in NW4 with a driveway. Further north, 74.5% of Colindale South households and 64.9% in Colindale North live in purpose-built flats. This page covers each case, the network side and the main fuse. For panels, see solar panels in Hendon; for keeping daytime power for the evening, see battery storage in Hendon.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Hendon:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Hendon is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network (homes near the edge of the area may be on London Power Networks); the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 12,097 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Barnet (2026 Q2), up from 10,089 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Hendon
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Supply and parking check
Your main fuse, consumer unit and earthing, and where you park in Hendon: a driveway or garage, or an on-street space that needs the council's say-so.
- Step 2
A written quote
Charger position, cable route and any fuse or supply work, itemised. A 7 kW charger draws about 32 A, so the survey checks the supply before anything is promised.
- Step 3
Installation
Fitting, testing and smart-charging set-up, with Eastern Power Networks told about the charger where the rules require it.
- Step 4
Handover
Off-peak and solar-matched charging explained, the app set up with you, and the certificates and warranty left with you.
Where a charger goes in Hendon's homes
On an NW4 semi or detached house with a driveway, the charger usually goes on the house wall beside the parking space or in an attached garage, close enough to the consumer unit to keep the cable run short. EnSmart's SmartBee-M, the charger we fit, is rated IP65 for outdoor wall mounting. Owner-occupiers of houses get no chargepoint grant, because the scheme that covered them closed in April 2022, and a home charger installation is standard-rated for VAT at 20%. Terraces are scarce here, 6.8% of Hendon ward households and 15.1% in West Hendon (Census 2021), and a terrace with only on-street parking runs into Barnet's rule, stated on its electric vehicles page, that cables from a home charge point may not cross the footway, even with a cable cover.
For a Hendon flat, the starting point is a parking space you control. The OZEV chargepoint grant gives renters and people who own and live in a flat 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, where they have private off-street or allocated parking; residential landlords can claim up to £500 per socket, for up to 200 sockets a year. Both run to 31 March 2027, and the claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage. In the Colindale blocks, the car park, the risers and the cable route usually belong to a freeholder or management company, so the managing agent's consent comes first, and a tenant also needs the landlord's agreement. Where a block has no allocated bay, Barnet invites residents to email its EV charging team to ask for an on-street charge point near their home, though it says it cannot guarantee one.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Hendon
The Hendon town centre is in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area, but the London Power Networks boundary is close, so check your own postcode with UK Power Networks' postcode checker rather than assuming which area your street is on. Both areas belong to UK Power Networks, and the installer notifies it of every new chargepoint; for a house whose supply can take the charger, an approved installer can do that through UK Power Networks' Smart Connect service within 28 days of installation. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously (7.4 kW at full rate), and main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A, so an NW4 house with an electric shower on a 60 A fuse is where load management, a sensor on the incoming supply that throttles the charger, earns its place.
If the supply genuinely cannot take the load, UK Power Networks says it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 A to 80 or 100 A, and a supply looped with a neighbour's has to be re-planned with both households. Smart charging does the scheduling: every new home chargepoint sold in Great Britain has had to be smart since 30 June 2022. For solar, PVGIS gives an unshaded 4 kWp south-facing array in Hendon about 475 kWh in June and 141 kWh in December. On our arithmetic, an average June day makes about 15.8 kWh, roughly 9 kWh more than the 6.8 kWh a day that Ofgem's typical 2,500 kWh a year works out at, and that surplus is what a compatible setup can put into the car; an average December day makes about 4.5 kWh. In a Colindale block the roof is shared, so solar charging is mainly a question for Hendon's houses.
Can a Hendon roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Hendon for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 475 kWh in June and about 141 kWh in December, 3,961 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.5 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Hendon
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Hendon home arrives itemised after a survey.

Hendon EV charger questions
I rent a flat in Hendon. Can I get a chargepoint grant?
Possibly, if you have a parking space of your own. 47.2% of Hendon ward households rent privately (Census 2021), and renters are one of the groups the OZEV chargepoint grant still covers: 75% of the cost of a chargepoint, up to £500 per socket, where you have private off-street or allocated parking, until 31 March 2027. You also need your landlord's agreement, and in a block the freeholder's or managing agent's. The claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say honestly whether the grant applies before any figures are agreed.
Can I get a charger in a Colindale block?
Only with the building's agreement. 74.5% of Colindale South households and 64.9% in Colindale North live in purpose-built flats (Census 2021), and in a managed block the car park, risers and cable routes belong to the freeholder or management company. If your flat has an allocated bay and the managing agent agrees a cable route from a supply you are allowed to use, a wall- or post-mounted charger is possible, and a flat owner or renter can claim the OZEV grant. A landlord or freeholder fitting several bays can claim up to £500 per socket, for up to 200 sockets a year.
Which network operator covers my Hendon street?
UK Power Networks. The Hendon town centre is in its Eastern Power Networks licence area, but the London Power Networks boundary is about 1.4 km away, so streets away from the centre may be on the London network; UK Power Networks' postcode checker will tell you. It makes no practical difference to you: the installer notifies UK Power Networks of every new chargepoint, and for a house whose supply can take the charger, an approved installer can use its Smart Connect service within 28 days of installation.
Is there a grant for a charger in Barnet if I own my house?
No. The OZEV scheme that funded chargers for owner-occupiers of houses closed in April 2022, and a home charger installation is standard-rated for VAT at 20%. Barnet's own page mentions OZEV funding of up to 75%, but that now applies to renters and to people who own and live in flats with off-street or allocated parking, and to residential landlords. If you own an NW4 house with a driveway, budget for the full cost, and ask for the charger, circuit, cable route and any load management as separate lines on the quote.
