EV Charger Installation Loughton
Home EV chargers for Loughton driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
Loughton sits on a network edge. The town centre is in UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence area, only about 1.2 km from the Eastern Power Networks boundary, so parts of the town may be on the other network. That, and a housing mix split almost evenly between semis (30.1%), terraces (26.5%) and flats (26.4%) at the 2021 Census, shapes EV charger installation in Loughton, from a drive on the Hills to a flat with an allocated bay. Our home EV charger installation guide covers the EnSmart SmartBee-M we fit, the speeds and the grants.
On PVGIS figures for Loughton, a south-facing 4 kWp array makes about 486 kWh in June, roughly 16.2 kWh a day, and about 142 kWh in December, roughly 4.6 kWh a day (our arithmetic); mature trees on the forest side of the Hills can pull a real roof below that. See what solar panels in Loughton would make on yours before relying on daytime charging, and battery storage in Loughton for how a house battery and a car share one roof.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Loughton:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Loughton is on UK Power Networks's London Power Networks network (homes near the edge of the area may be on Eastern Power Networks); the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 4,676 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Epping Forest (2026 Q2), up from 3,594 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Loughton
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1

Where a charger goes in Loughton's homes
In the 30.1% of Loughton households in semis and the 16.9% in detached houses, the charger normally goes on a side or front wall by the drive or inside a garage, wired back on its own circuit. On the Hills, where most houses are Victorian, and in the Baldwins Hill, Staples Road and York Hill conservation areas, we look first for a position that leaves the street view unchanged, and we read the Article 4 direction for Staples Road or York Hill against your address before fixing anything outside. On a listed house, listed building consent is a separate question.
Flats are 26.4% of Loughton households, and a charger in a block's car park needs the freeholder's or managing agent's consent and a supply route from the right meter. Renters and flat owners with private off-street or allocated parking can get OZEV's grant, 75% of the cost up to £500, which must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage. The 17.5% of households renting socially need their landlord's agreement first. For terraces in Debden and elsewhere with no off-street space, Essex Highways says a cable across the public footway is illegal and not permitted, and cross-pavement channels are not currently permitted while it develops a trial.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Loughton
Whichever licence your IG10 address is on, the operator is UK Power Networks: the town centre is on London Power Networks, and UK Power Networks' area checker confirms your own postcode. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously. On a 100 A main fuse that leaves 68 A for the rest of the house, on 60 A only 28 A (our arithmetic), so the survey reads the fuse, earthing and consumer unit first. Load management, a sensor that turns the charger down while the house is busy, usually avoids an upgrade; where it cannot, UK Power Networks says it can raise a 30 A or 60 A main fuse to 80 A or 100 A. The installer notifies UKPN of the chargepoint, not you.
Every new chargepoint sold in Great Britain has had to be smart since 30 June 2022, so overnight scheduling is standard. In June an unshaded Loughton roof averages about 16.2 kWh a day on PVGIS figures, enough in principle for a little over two hours at the full 7 kW (our arithmetic), though the car only takes what the house is not using. In December the figure is about 4.6 kWh a day, around 40 minutes at full rate, and less under the Hills' trees, so winter charging in IG10 is mostly overnight.
Can a Loughton roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Loughton for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 486 kWh in June and about 142 kWh in December, 4,030 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.6 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Loughton
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Loughton home arrives itemised after a survey.

Loughton EV charger questions
Which network is my Loughton home on?
Check your postcode. The town centre is on UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence area, about 1.2 km from the Eastern Power Networks boundary, and UK Power Networks' area checker confirms the network for your own IG10 address. Either way UK Power Networks is the operator, and for a charger the process is the same: the installer notifies it of the new chargepoint, and if the supply needs a larger fuse, UKPN does that work.
Can I have a charger for my Loughton flat?
Sometimes. 26.4% of households in the Loughton built-up area lived in flats at the 2021 Census, and in most blocks the parking, walls and supply route belong to a freeholder, so written consent comes first; a tenant needs the landlord's agreement too. If you have private off-street or allocated parking, OZEV's grant covers 75% of the cost up to £500, and the claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Can I get a charger at a Loughton terrace with on-street parking?
Not with a cable across the pavement. Essex Highways says trailing a charging cable across the public footway is illegal and not permitted, and it does not allow cable covers or matting. Cross-pavement channels are under review, with a trial framework in development and applications due later in 2026; until one is approved for your street, the OZEV on-street grant cannot be used in Loughton. Public chargepoints are the practical option for now.
Can solar charge my car in Loughton in winter?
Only a little. PVGIS gives a south-facing 4 kWp array in Loughton about 4.6 kWh a day in December, around 40 minutes at the full 7 kW (our arithmetic), before the house takes its share, and trees on the Hills can reduce that. In June the same roof averages about 16.2 kWh a day. So solar charging is a summer gain, and in winter the smart charger fills the car in your off-peak window.
