Battery storage — Buckinghamshire
Tesla Powerwall in Milton Keynes
What Tesla Powerwall means for a Buckinghamshire home, how it compares with the systems we fit, and a written answer on supply, installation and warranty if it is the one you want.
Our Buckinghamshire coverage is Milton Keynes, and the city’s first question about a Tesla Powerwall 3 is often who controls the wall. 6.1% of households in the council area, 6,905 of them, live in shared ownership, about six times England’s 1.0% (our arithmetic), and GOV.UK says every shared-ownership home is leasehold. This page covers that consent question, where a 130 kg Powerwall fits the city’s evenly split housing, the East Midlands network paperwork, and the city’s own figures. For roofs, see solar panels in Buckinghamshire and solar panels in Milton Keynes; for storage generally, our battery storage guide; and for the city detail, battery storage in Milton Keynes.
The battery system in HCE’s own job photos is EnSmart; if a Powerwall 3 is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches. Tesla’s warranty applies to a Powerwall that “was purchased from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer”, and installation, commissioning or repair by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla certified installer is listed among the grounds on which cover may be voided. Check any company quoting you in Milton Keynes, HCE included, in Tesla’s certified-installer finder.
Quick answer
Tesla Powerwall in Buckinghamshire:
- Our own work: the battery systems in HCE's own job photos are EnSmart; if Tesla Powerwall is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches.
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; a quote for your home comes from a survey of your usage.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: every battery is notified to, or approved by, the local network operator depending on its size (G98 or G99); the installer handles it.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup has to be designed in and is never assumed.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

How a home battery gets fitted in Buckinghamshire
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Your usage, not a guess
We look at when your Buckinghamshire home uses power, especially evenings, and your tariff, because that, not the sunniest month, decides the battery size.
- Step 2
Sizing and siting
Where the unit can go (garage, utility room or an outside wall, as the manufacturer allows), whether it pairs with existing panels, and a written, itemised quote.
- Step 3
Installation and notification
Fitting and commissioning, with the battery notified to or approved by your network operator depending on its size. Backup in a power cut only if it is designed in.
- Step 4
Settings and handover
Charge and discharge set up around your tariff, the app explained, and the warranty documents in your hand.
How Tesla Powerwall fits Buckinghamshire homes
Milton Keynes’ built-up area splits almost evenly: 28.4% of households in detached houses, 26.5% in semis, 24.7% in terraces and 20.3% in flats or maisonettes (Census 2021). In the detached and semi-detached houses a Powerwall, 1105 × 609 × 193 mm and 130 kg, usually stands in the garage or goes on a side wall near the meter, which its IP55 enclosure and −20°C to 50°C range allow. A terrace without side access means an indoor position near the consumer unit, carried in by two people. In a shared-ownership home the housing association, as freeholder, has to agree before anything is fixed, and in the city’s 27 conservation areas, Stony Stratford and Wolverton among them, keep any outdoor unit off the street-facing elevation.
The city is on a different network from every other region on our pages. Central Milton Keynes sits in National Grid Electricity Distribution’s East Midlands licence area, about 7 km from UK Power Networks’ Eastern area, and NGED describes that area as running to Milton Keynes in the south. The rules are the national ones: a Powerwall set at 3.68 kW or below is notified within 28 days of commissioning under G98, and a higher setting, up to the Powerwall’s 11.04 kW, needs a G99 approval before work starts. The installer submits either, and the design should state which one yours needs.
Buckinghamshire: sunshine, the grid and local uptake
With one city on our Buckinghamshire pages, there is one PVGIS point: a 4 kWp south-facing array in Milton Keynes gives about 136 kWh in December and 474 kWh in June, around 3,942 kWh a year. That is about 4.4 kWh a day in December against 15.8 kWh in June (our arithmetic), so a Powerwall’s 13.5 kWh can fill from the roof on a good summer day and not in winter.
DESNZ records 8,802 solar PV installations across Milton Keynes at the end of 2025, with 82.26 MW of capacity between them, from house roofs to larger sites. DVLA counts 10,047 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the council area at the end of June 2026, up from 6,924 a year earlier; only private keepers are counted, because most Milton Keynes registrations are company vehicles. Ofgem’s 2024/25 figures for the East Midlands licence area show about 34.3 supply interruptions per 100 customers and 24.6 minutes lost per customer, against 39.7 and 35.1 across all GB licence areas. A Powerwall supplies the home during an outage only when a Backup Gateway 2 is installed.

Tesla Powerwall in Buckinghamshire: questions
I own a shared-ownership home in Milton Keynes. Can I have a Powerwall?
Possibly, but not on your say-so alone. GOV.UK says every shared-ownership home is leasehold, so the housing association, as freeholder, has to agree before a 130 kg unit is fixed to the building or wired into it. Ask them first, in writing; the survey can follow once you have their answer.
Which network approves a Powerwall in Milton Keynes?
National Grid Electricity Distribution, whose East Midlands licence area covers central Milton Keynes. A Powerwall set at 3.68 kW or below is notified within 28 days under G98; a higher output needs a G99 approval before work starts. The installer makes the application, and the design should say which route it needs.
Will a Powerwall keep my Milton Keynes home running in a power cut?
Only with a Backup Gateway 2 in the design. Tesla states that a Powerwall 3 in its non-backup configuration, which uses a Tesla Remote Meter, provides no backup power during an outage. With the Gateway you choose whole-home backup or nominated circuits, and that choice is the biggest single difference between two Powerwall quotes.
Does it matter who supplies the Powerwall for the warranty?
Yes. Tesla’s European warranty applies to a Powerwall purchased from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer, and installation, commissioning or repair by anyone else is listed among the grounds on which cover may be voided. The full ten years, with 80% of capacity retained for UK installations, also needs registration and an internet connection. Get the supply route in writing and check Tesla’s certified-installer finder.
