Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Barnet
Home batteries for Barnet homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Barnet looks different from one ward to the next. In High Barnet almost a quarter of households live in detached houses and two-thirds own their home; in Barnet Vale, next door, 37.2% live in purpose-built flats, where a freeholder decides what can be fitted. The EN5 postcode district even crosses into Hertsmere. Most batteries go in alongside panels, so start with what solar panels in Barnet could generate on your roof.
Across the London Borough of Barnet, DVLA counts 12,097 privately kept plug-in vehicles at the end of June 2026, up from 10,089 a year earlier, and DESNZ records about 3,477 solar PV installations of all sizes. Those are borough-wide figures, not just the town's. Whether storage suits your home depends on your evening usage and tariff; our main battery storage guide explains the products and sizing.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Barnet:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Barnet makes about 477 kWh in June but about 139 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Barnet is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Barnet's homes
High Barnet ward is the house-heavy end: Census 2021 counts 23.7% of households in detached houses, 24.7% in semis and 20.2% in terraces, with 67.6% owning their home (36.0% outright). East Barnet is led by semis, at 36.4%. In those houses a garage, utility room or inside wall near the consumer unit is the usual home for a battery. We rarely suggest a loft, which is awkward to service and swings between hot and cold; the manufacturer's installation instructions set the limits. Underhill has the most terraces of the four town wards, at 22.6%, and a terrace without side access means an indoor position.
Barnet Vale, at 37.2% purpose-built flats, needs freeholder or managing-agent consent before anything is fixed to a building, and in Underhill, where 24.0% of households rent socially, the landlord decides. Wood Street and Monken Hadley are among the borough's 16 conservation areas and both carry Article 4 directions; keep a battery indoors or on a rear wall there, and ask the council before fixing anything to a street-facing or listed wall. If your EN5 address is on the Hertsmere side, Hertsmere Borough Council is the planning authority, not Barnet.
What a Barnet roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Barnet itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,959 kWh a year in total
- 477 kWh in June and 483 kWh in July
- 139 kWh in December and 157 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Barnet
Barnet's town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area, not its London Power Networks area as you might expect, though UKPN is the operator either way. Under G98, a type-tested system rated up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified before commissioning or within 28 days of it; anything above needs a G99 application approved before work starts, and a 4 kW inverter, at 17.39 A, is just over the line. UKPN says it automatically approves home solar and storage applications whose maximum export, after any export limitation, is under 5 kW. Your installer submits the forms.
On power cuts, the plain answer: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, however full, so it cannot feed power into lines engineers may be working on. If you want certain circuits in an EN4 or EN5 home, from Arkley to Monken Hadley, to stay on during a cut, backup has to be designed in from the start, with an inverter that supports it and a way to isolate the house from the grid. It costs more, and we will tell you if it is worth it.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Barnet
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Barnet battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Barnet Vale flat?
Possibly, with consent. Barnet Vale ward has 37.2% of households in purpose-built flats (Census 2021). The freeholder or managing agent must agree to anything fixed to the building, and a tenant needs the landlord's agreement. The battery also needs a position inside the flat that meets the manufacturer's installation instructions, with a sensible cable route; if there is none, we will tell you.
Will a battery keep my Barnet home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery switches off when the grid fails, to protect engineers working on UK Power Networks' lines. Backup is possible with an inverter that supports it and a way to isolate your home from the grid, designed in from the start and priced separately.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in Barnet?
Your installer does. Barnet's town centre is in UKPN's Eastern Power Networks area. Systems up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) are notified under G98 before commissioning or within 28 days; larger systems need a G99 application approved before work starts. UKPN says it automatically approves applications whose maximum export is under 5 kW after any export limitation.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in the London Borough of Barnet?
It depends on your tariff and routine. DVLA counts 12,097 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the borough (end of June 2026), up from 10,089 a year earlier. In a High Barnet house with a driveway, a battery can store daytime solar or off-peak electricity for the evening; if an off-peak tariff already covers most of that, we will tell you rather than sell you storage you do not need.
