Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Finchley
Home batteries for Finchley homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Finchley is mostly a question about who controls the space, not about the sunshine. In West Finchley and Finchley Church End wards, 17.7% and 16.4% of households live in part of a converted or shared house, about twice the 8.8% across Barnet borough (Census 2021). Many Finchley homes are therefore one flat's worth of floor space, one share of a roof and a meter of their own. A battery can work there, but it is agreed and placed differently from one in a whole house. If you are still deciding on panels, start with what solar panels in Finchley would generate on your roof.
The houses are the simpler case. Finchley Church End ward is 23.9% semi-detached and 11.6% detached, East Finchley is the most terraced of the four wards at 24.7%, and Woodhouse, on the N12 side, is 23.0% semis and 20.0% terraces. Across N2, N3 and N12 that gives a real mix of garages, utility rooms and understairs cupboards to work with. This page takes each in turn, then covers what UK Power Networks needs to know and why an ordinary battery goes dark in a power cut. For products and sizing, see our main battery storage guide.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Finchley:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Finchley makes about 476 kWh in June but about 142 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Finchley is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Finchley's homes
Start with the semis and detached houses around Finchley Church End and Woodside Park. Where there is an attached garage or a utility room on an outside wall, that is usually the easiest place for a battery: a short cable run to the consumer unit, room for ventilation and no living space given up. Indoors matters, because the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50 and is for indoor use only. A loft is possible only where the space, temperature and access suit the unit's rating, and the survey checks that first. In East Finchley, where 24.7% of households live in terraces and only 2.4% in detached houses (Census 2021), a mid-terrace has no side access, so an understairs cupboard or a rear room near the consumer unit is the usual answer.
Converted houses need a different conversation. In a West Finchley house split into flats, each flat usually has its own supply and meter, so a battery serves one flat's circuits and sits in that flat's own space; a shared hall or cellar is off-limits without the freeholder's and the other leaseholders' agreement. Private renting reaches 41.2% of households in West Finchley and 38.1% in Woodhouse (Census 2021), so for many people the first step is a landlord's consent. In the Finchley Garden Village and Moss Hall Crescent conservation areas, Barnet's Article 4 records concern the solar class, not batteries: an indoor battery changes nothing on the street, and any outdoor unit belongs on a rear or side wall. For a listed house, talk to Barnet's conservation officer before anything is fixed to it.
What a Finchley roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Finchley itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,952 kWh a year in total
- 476 kWh in June and 479 kWh in July
- 142 kWh in December and 158 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Finchley
Finchley town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area; the London Power Networks area begins further south. UK Power Networks is the network operator, not your energy supplier, and the installer deals with it, not you. Under ENA EREC G98, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified before commissioning or within 28 days after; anything larger needs a G99 application approved before work starts. A battery's inverter counts towards that total alongside any panels, so adding storage to an existing Finchley array can move a system from one route to the other. In a converted house, each flat's supply is normally its own connection and is assessed on its own.
On power cuts, the plain fact is that a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does. That is a safety measure protecting people working on the lines, and it means a Finchley home with an ordinary battery goes dark along with its neighbours. Keeping chosen circuits live needs a system designed for backup from the start, with equipment that separates your home from the grid first; in a converted flat that design has to fit inside one flat's wiring. If backup matters to you, say so at the survey and it will be priced as its own line rather than assumed.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Finchley
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Finchley battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a converted flat in Finchley?
Often, yes, but it is a shared-building decision. In West Finchley and Finchley Church End wards, 17.7% and 16.4% of households live in part of a converted or shared house (Census 2021), and in a split house each flat usually has its own meter, so a battery serves your flat's circuits only. It has to sit inside your own space, typically a cupboard or utility area near your consumer unit, because the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50 and is for indoor use only. Check your lease, since many require the freeholder's consent for alterations, and a shared hallway or cellar needs everyone's agreement. If those consents are not in place, we will say so rather than quote.
Does a battery need planning permission in Finchley Garden Village or Moss Hall Crescent?
We do not rely on any battery-specific planning rule, and you should be wary of anyone who quotes one without showing it. What Barnet's records on the government's planning data platform show is that the Article 4 directions for Finchley Garden Village and Moss Hall Crescent list the solar class (Part 14, Class A) among the rights removed; they say nothing about batteries. A battery fitted indoors, in a garage, utility room or cupboard, does not change the outside of the house. If any part of the system has to go outside, we put it on a rear or side wall out of view, and if there is doubt, or the house is listed, we ask Barnet first.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in Finchley?
Your installer does, not you. Finchley town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area. A type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under ENA EREC G98 before commissioning or within 28 days after; anything larger needs a G99 application approved before work starts, and a battery's inverter counts towards that total alongside any panels. UK Power Networks says it approves home solar and storage automatically where the maximum export, after any export limit, is under 5 kW. In a converted house, each flat's supply is normally its own connection, so the paperwork covers your flat alone.
Will a battery keep my Finchley home running in a power cut?
Not unless it is designed to. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, as a safety measure for engineers working on the lines. Backup needs equipment that separates your home from the grid before it powers chosen circuits, such as lights, the fridge and the heating controls, and that adds cost. In a Church End or Woodside Park semi there is often room for it near the consumer unit; in a converted flat it has to fit within your flat's own wiring. Tell us at the survey if backup matters, and we will price it as a separate line.
