Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Muswell Hill
Home batteries for Muswell Hill homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Muswell Hill is mostly a question for owner-occupiers, and there are more of them here than in most of Haringey: 55.4% of households in Muswell Hill ward and 59.2% in Fortis Green own their home, against 37.2% across the borough (Census 2021). The houses are largely Edwardian, mostly laid out between 1896 and 1913 according to Haringey's conservation-area appraisal, and many have since been split into flats. Those two facts decide where a battery can go and who has to agree. For the panel side, see solar panels in Muswell Hill.
Haringey also runs a local incentive that treats panels and a battery together: the Power Boost Haringey Fund, which counts solar PV and battery storage as one type of measure. This page covers how that works, where a battery physically fits in N10's terraces, semis and converted houses, the network paperwork and the power-cut reality. Our battery storage guide covers the products and sizing.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Muswell Hill:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Muswell Hill makes about 475 kWh in June but about 142 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Muswell Hill is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Muswell Hill's homes
In Muswell Hill ward the largest single group of households, 32.6% of 3,812, lives in part of a converted or shared house, with 26.2% in purpose-built flats, 20.3% in terraces, 13.3% in semis and just 2.7% in detached houses; next door in Fortis Green, terraces lead at 28.7% (Census 2021). Where an Edwardian terrace has no garage or side access, the usual home for a battery is an understairs cupboard, a utility area or a rear room near the consumer unit, kept indoors because the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50, indoor only. A loft is possible only where temperature, access and the unit's rating allow. The semis have more choice, including a side passage for EnSmart's floor-standing packs, which are rated IP55 for outdoor use away from direct sunlight.
In a converted house each flat usually has its own supply, so a battery serves one flat, needs the freeholder's consent and, if it uses a shared space, the other leaseholders' too; Haringey's appraisal notes that many houses on Queens Avenue have been subdivided in just this way. Muswell Hill and Fortis Green have been conservation areas since 1 March 1974 and the Rookfield Estate since 1976. Rookfield's 1978 Article 4 direction covers extensions, porches, hard standings, boundaries and painting, and does not mention batteries. An indoor battery leaves the street untouched, any outdoor unit belongs at the rear, and a listed building needs Haringey's view before anything is fixed to it.
What a Muswell Hill roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Muswell Hill itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,955 kWh a year in total
- 475 kWh in June and 478 kWh in July
- 142 kWh in December and 159 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Muswell Hill
Muswell Hill's town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area. The installer notifies or applies on your behalf: under ENA EREC G98, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified before commissioning or within 28 days after, and anything bigger needs a G99 application approved before work starts. Where an N10 roof broken up by dormers and chimney stacks takes only a small array, the battery's inverter can be what decides which side of 3.68 kW a system lands. UK Power Networks says it approves home solar and storage automatically where the maximum export, after any export limit, is under 5 kW.
A standard grid-tied battery shuts down in a power cut. It is a safety requirement that protects engineers on the lines, and it means an ordinary battery in a Muswell Hill house or flat goes dark along with the street. Backup has to be designed in, with equipment that separates the home from the grid before it powers chosen circuits, and in a converted Edwardian house that design stays within one flat's wiring. It adds cost, so we price it as its own line and tell you if it is not worth it.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Muswell Hill
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Muswell Hill battery questions
Does the Power Boost Haringey Fund help with a battery in Muswell Hill?
It can, with conditions. From March 2026 the fund offers Haringey's private homeowners 15% cashback for two types of measure or 25% for three, up to £5,000. Solar panels with battery storage count as one type, so a battery qualifies only as part of solar-plus-battery alongside insulation or a heat pump. It runs through the Power Up Homes group buy operated by RetrofitWorks, with that scheme's own suppliers, so treat it as one option to price against an independent quote. With 55.4% of Muswell Hill ward households owning their home (Census 2021), it is open to more households here than across much of Haringey.
Can I fit a battery in a converted flat in N10?
Often, with the right consents. In Muswell Hill ward, 32.6% of households live in part of a converted or shared house, the largest single group (Census 2021). In a split Edwardian house each flat usually has its own meter, so a battery serves your flat alone and sits in your own space, typically a cupboard near the consumer unit, since the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50 and is indoor only. Check your lease, as many require the freeholder's consent for alterations, and a shared hall or cellar needs everyone's agreement.
Where does a battery go in a Muswell Hill terrace?
Indoors, close to the consumer unit. Terraces house 20.3% of households in Muswell Hill ward and 28.7% in Fortis Green (Census 2021), and a mid-terrace has no side access for an outdoor unit, so an understairs cupboard or a rear room is the usual choice. EnSmart's SolarAll-H hybrid inverter, rated IP65, can go on a rear wall if indoor space is tight. A loft is possible only where temperature, access and the unit's rating allow. In the Muswell Hill and Fortis Green conservation areas, an indoor battery changes nothing on the street.
Will a battery keep my Muswell Hill home running in a power cut?
Not as standard. A grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, a safety requirement that protects people working on the lines. Backup needs equipment that separates your home from the grid before it powers chosen circuits, and in an Edwardian terrace the space beside the consumer unit, often under the stairs, has to take that equipment as well as the battery. It is a separate line on our quote; if you are buying through the Power Boost route instead, ask that scheme's supplier the same question in writing.
