Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Edgware
Home batteries for Edgware homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Edgware usually means a semi. Semi-detached houses are the largest housing type in all three of Edgware's wards: 39.0% of households in Edgware ward on the Barnet side, 49.6% in Edgwarebury and 48.3% in Harrow's Edgware ward (Census 2021), and Barnet's Edgware ward adds 15.9% detached. Those are the homes where a battery has the most places to go and an owner who can decide: 59.5% of households own their home on the Barnet side and 62.4% in Edgwarebury. For the panel side of the decision, see solar panels in Edgware.
Edgware is also split by a borough boundary, and the HA8 postcode district reaches into Brent as well, so the council you deal with on planning depends on your street. The electricity network does not change at that line in the town centre, and a battery in a Burnt Oak terrace is a different job from one in a Canons Park semi. This page takes them in turn; the products and sizing are in our battery storage guide.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Edgware:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Edgware makes about 474 kWh in June but about 138 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Edgware is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Edgware's homes
A typical Edgware semi gives a battery three options. An attached or integral garage usually comes first: the unit stays indoors, the cable run to the consumer unit is short and no living space is lost. A utility room on an outside wall is next, and a loft is possible only where temperature, access and the unit's rating allow, which the survey checks. Indoors matters because the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50, indoor only; EnSmart's floor-standing packs are rated IP55 for outdoor use away from direct sunlight, which can suit the side passage of a semi whose garage is full. In Burnt Oak, to the south-east, 37.0% of households live in terraces (Census 2021), and where there is no side access an understairs cupboard is the usual home.
Ownership shapes the rest. In Harrow's Edgware ward 37.1% of households rent privately, and in Burnt Oak 33.5% rent socially (Census 2021), so for those homes a landlord or housing association decides, and any flat also needs the freeholder's consent. On planning, Harrow's Canons Park Estate carries an Article 4 direction and Edgware High Street conservation area does not; on the Barnet side, the Watling Estate in Burnt Oak has no direction in Barnet's records. An indoor battery changes nothing on the street in any of them, and an outdoor unit belongs on a side or rear wall. If you are unsure which borough your house is in, it is the council your council tax goes to.
What a Edgware roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Edgware itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,938 kWh a year in total
- 474 kWh in June and 478 kWh in July
- 138 kWh in December and 157 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Edgware
Edgware town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area on both sides of the borough boundary, so the network paperwork is the same whether your council is Barnet or Harrow. The installer handles it: under ENA EREC G98, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified before commissioning or within 28 days after, and a larger one needs a G99 application approved before work starts. A semi with a large south-facing roof and a sizeable battery is exactly the kind of system that can cross the 3.68 kW line, which is why the inverter size is settled at the survey. UK Power Networks says it approves home solar and storage automatically where the maximum export, after any export limit, is under 5 kW.
A standard grid-tied battery shuts down in a power cut. That is a safety requirement, not a fault, and it means an ordinary battery in an Edgware semi goes dark with the rest of the street. Keeping chosen circuits running needs backup designed in from the start, with equipment that separates the house from the grid first; in a semi with a garage there is often room for that extra kit beside the battery, but it is a separate cost and we price it as its own line. If outage cover is not important to your household, a simpler system is the honest recommendation.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Edgware
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Edgware battery questions
Where does a battery go in an Edgware semi?
Usually the garage, then a utility room. Semis are the largest housing type in all three Edgware wards, up to 49.6% of households in Edgwarebury (Census 2021), and a garage keeps the battery indoors, near the consumer unit and out of your living space. That matters because the EnSmart wall-mounted battery we fit is rated IP50 and is indoor only; EnSmart's floor-standing packs are rated IP55 and can stand outdoors away from direct sunlight, which can suit a side passage. A loft is possible only where temperature, access and the unit's rating allow. The survey checks the wall, ventilation and cable route before any position is agreed.
Does it matter whether my Edgware home is in Barnet or Harrow?
For planning, yes; for the network, not in the town centre. The HA8 postcode district spans Barnet, Harrow and Brent, and the council your council tax goes to is your planning authority: the Canons Park Estate Article 4 direction and Edgware High Street conservation area are Harrow's, while the Watling Estate is Barnet's. Edgware town centre is in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area on both sides of the line. Both boroughs belong to the GLA-led consortium for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund a battery only alongside existing or newly installed solar panels.
Will a battery keep my Edgware home running in a power cut?
Only if backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, a safety requirement that protects engineers on the lines. A backup design adds equipment that separates the house from the grid and then powers chosen circuits, and in an Edgware semi with a garage there is often space for it beside the battery. It is a separate line on the quote, and if your household rarely needs it, we will tell you the simpler system is the better buy.
