Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Edmonton
Home batteries for Edmonton homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Home battery storage in Edmonton starts with a question most battery pages skip: whose home is it? Across Edmonton Green, Lower Edmonton and Upper Edmonton wards, 31.7% of the 17,661 households own their home, while 33.3% rent privately and 33.1% rent from a social landlord (Census 2021, our sums of the ward counts). If you own a Lower Edmonton terrace, a battery is your own decision; for most other households it begins with a landlord or freeholder. This page covers where a unit physically goes in N9 and N18 homes, how the network paperwork works and what happens when the grid goes down.
For the 30.6% of Edmonton households in terraced houses and the 24.5% in semis or detached homes (our sum of the three wards' figures), the usual route is a battery fitted alongside solar panels in Edmonton, so that what the roof makes while you are out covers the evening instead of being exported. A battery can also go in on its own and charge overnight where your tariff has a cheaper rate. Our battery storage guide covers the products and how sizing works; this page sticks to what is particular to the streets between Silver Street, Angel Edmonton and Edmonton Green.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Edmonton:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Edmonton makes about 477 kWh in June but about 142 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Edmonton is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Edmonton's homes
In Lower Edmonton ward 41.6% of the 5,826 households live in a terraced house (Census 2021), and a mid-terrace has no side passage, so the battery has to go somewhere the cable can reach from inside: a rear kitchen extension or utility space, an outside back wall, or a garden building close enough for a sensible cable run. Hallways and the space under the stairs are escape routes and best kept clear. The 17.9% of households in semis and 6.6% in detached houses across the three wards usually have more choice, such as a garage or a side wall near the consumer unit. A loft only works if it stays within the manufacturer's temperature range and can be reached safely for servicing, which the survey checks rather than assumes.
Flats change the question. Purpose-built flats house 38.2% of households across the three wards and 51.6% in Edmonton Green ward on its own, and UK Power Networks says the building owner's permission is needed before solar or storage work starts on a multi-occupied building. In practice that means the freeholder, managing agent or housing association first, and you will need agreement on where the unit is fixed, who owns it and who maintains it. On planning, Edmonton's two conservation areas, Church Street and the three sections of Fore Street, carry no Article 4 direction. A battery inside a garage or utility room does not change the outside of the house; an external unit on a street-facing wall in either area is worth raising with Enfield's planners before it goes up, and any listed building needs listed building consent for works that affect its character.
What a Edmonton roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Edmonton itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,959 kWh a year in total
- 477 kWh in June and 478 kWh in July
- 142 kWh in December and 159 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Edmonton
Edmonton town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area, with the London Power Networks area beginning to the south-east; if you live towards the Tottenham edge of N18, UKPN's area checker confirms which network serves your postcode. The battery connects through an inverter, and the paperwork follows that inverter's output. Under the ENA's G98 standard, type-tested equipment up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified to UKPN by the installer, no later than 28 days after commissioning. Anything above that needs a G99 application approved before work starts.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, and any panels on the roof stop too, so an Edmonton home with an ordinary battery loses power along with the rest of the street. Keeping some circuits live needs backup designed in from the start: a backup-capable inverter or gateway, an automatic changeover and a separate circuit for the essentials you choose. In a terrace where the consumer unit is by the front door and the battery at the back, that wiring is a real part of the job, so we price it only if you want it and it makes sense for your home. UKPN says there is nothing for you to pay it unless your supply needs upgrading first.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Edmonton
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Edmonton battery questions
Can I fit a battery in an Edmonton flat?
Sometimes, but not on your own say-so. Purpose-built flats are 38.2% of households across the three Edmonton wards and more than half in Edmonton Green ward (Census 2021), and UK Power Networks says the building owner's permission is needed before solar or storage work begins on a multi-occupied building. So the freeholder, managing agent or housing association has to agree where the unit is fixed, how the cable runs to your consumer unit and who maintains it. A battery in a flat also needs a position that is not an escape route, which rules out most communal hallways. Where those pieces do not fit, we will say so rather than force a design.
Will a battery keep my Edmonton home running in a power cut?
Not unless it is designed to. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, and solar panels stop too. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter or gateway, an automatic changeover and a separate circuit for the loads you want kept on, all planned at the survey. It adds cost and wiring work, which in an Edmonton terrace often means a longer run between the battery at the back and a consumer unit by the front door. If backup matters to you, tell us at the start and we will show you what it involves for your house.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in N9 or N18?
Your installer does it for you. Edmonton town centre is on UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area. For type-tested equipment up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), the installer notifies UKPN under G98 no later than 28 days after commissioning; above that, a G99 application must be approved before work starts. UKPN says it approves automatically where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW, and there is nothing for you to pay it unless your supply needs upgrading.
