Battery storage — North London
Battery Storage Enfield
Home batteries for Enfield homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Home battery storage in Enfield looks very different from one end of the town to the other. In Bush Hill Park ward 77.2% of households own their home and the semi is the most common house type; in Ponders End the ownership figure is 36.4% (Census 2021). That split decides who can say yes to a battery: an owner in an EN1 or EN2 house usually can, while a tenant in EN3 starts with a landlord. This page covers where a unit fits in Enfield's houses and flats, how UK Power Networks deals with the paperwork, and what a battery will and will not do when the power goes off.
In Grange Park 18.3% of households live in detached houses, well over twice the borough's 7.5%, and in Bush Hill Park 36.0% live in semis; homes like these are where a battery is most often paired with solar panels in Enfield, storing midday output for the evening. Without panels, a battery can still be charged overnight if your tariff has a cheaper rate. Our battery storage guide explains products and sizing; this page deals with Enfield's own housing, planning and grid.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Enfield:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Enfield makes about 476 kWh in June but about 139 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Enfield is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Enfield's homes
Across the London Borough of Enfield's 120,923 households, 24.8% live in semis and 7.5% in detached houses (Census 2021), and those homes have the most options: an attached or integral garage, a utility room, or a side wall close to the consumer unit, each of which keeps the cable short and the unit out of living space. The 28.9% in terraces, rising to more than four in ten households in Southbury and Jubilee wards, usually have no side access, so the battery goes on a rear wall, in a back extension or in a garden building the cable can realistically reach. A loft is a last resort: it must stay within the manufacturer's temperature range and be safe to reach for servicing, and hallways and stairs, as escape routes, are best left clear.
Purpose-built flats are 30.4% of Enfield households and converted or shared houses another 6.5%. UK Power Networks says the building owner's permission is needed before solar or storage work begins on a multi-occupied building, so a leaseholder starts with the freeholder and a tenant with the landlord. On planning, Enfield has 22 conservation areas and many carry Article 4 directions, including Enfield Town's, in force since 8 January 2018, and the 2008 directions over most of Grange Park. A battery indoors or in a garage does not change the outside of the house. For a unit on an outside wall in a conservation area, keep it off the street elevation or ask the council first, and a listed building needs listed building consent for works that affect its character.
What a Enfield roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Enfield itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,955 kWh a year in total
- 476 kWh in June and 480 kWh in July
- 139 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Enfield
Enfield town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks licence area; the London Power Networks area lies further south, and UKPN's area checker confirms the network for any address. What decides the paperwork is the rated output of the inverter that connects your battery. Up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), the ENA's G98 standard lets the installer notify UKPN no later than 28 days after commissioning; above that, a G99 application has to be approved before any work starts. Where a Grange Park or Bush Hill Park house already has panels, the survey looks at everything already connected as well as the new unit, because UKPN approves automatically only where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery in Enfield switches off with the grid, and any panels stop too. If you want the fridge, the lights or your boiler's controls to keep running, backup has to be designed in from the start: a backup-capable inverter or gateway, an automatic changeover and a protected circuit for the loads you choose. That adds cost and wiring work, and it is usually simpler to lay out in a detached house with a garage than in an EN3 terrace with the consumer unit by the front door. We will tell you which applies to your home before you decide.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 32.5 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Enfield
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Enfield battery questions
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Enfield?
It can be, but the two do different jobs. DVLA records 6,546 privately kept plug-in vehicles in the London Borough of Enfield at the end of June 2026, about 27% more than a year earlier. If you charge the car at home overnight on an off-peak tariff, that tariff prices those units well below the 26.32p per kWh Ofgem cap unit rate for October to December 2026 (Direct Debit). A home battery is sized to your household's evening use, not to the car: it can store cheap overnight or daytime solar electricity for the evening peak, while the car charges straight from the off-peak rate. We look at your tariff and usage together before suggesting either.
Where would a battery go in my Enfield semi?
Usually in an attached or integral garage, a utility room or on a side wall close to the consumer unit, which keeps the cable short and the unit out of living space. Semis are 24.8% of Enfield households (Census 2021), and in Bush Hill Park they are the most common house type. A hallway or the space under the stairs is an escape route and best kept clear, and a loft only suits a unit that stays within its manufacturer's temperature range and can be reached safely for servicing. The survey settles the position before anything is quoted.
Do I need planning permission for a battery in an Enfield conservation area?
A battery indoors or in a garage does not change the outside of the house. Enfield has 22 conservation areas and many carry Article 4 directions, including Enfield Town's (in force since 8 January 2018) and the 2008 directions over most of Grange Park, so for any unit on an outside wall the sensible course is to keep it off the street elevation or ask the council before it goes up. A listed building needs listed building consent for works that affect its character. We check your address before designing anything rather than rely on a rule of thumb.
Will a battery keep my Enfield home powered in a power cut?
Only if backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, and panels stop with it. A backup system needs a backup-capable inverter or gateway, an automatic changeover and a separate circuit for the loads you choose, and it costs more to install. Enfield town centre is on UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area; this page sets out Ofgem's reliability figures for it, and we will tell you plainly whether backup is worth it for your house.
