Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Epsom
Home batteries for Epsom homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Epsom is not a new idea: the first three Solar Together rounds alone put 132 batteries into homes in Epsom and Ewell, alongside 157 household solar installations. Semis are the borough’s most common home, at 34.9% of households (Census 2021), and they are usually the easiest place to fit one. If the roof question is still open, start with solar panels in Epsom.
This page covers storage for homes from Woodcote and Stamford Green to College Road, Langley Vale and the former hospital cluster at Horton: where a unit goes, which network the town is on, and what the borough’s figures on solar, plug-in cars and gas connections show. Our main battery storage guide explains products and sizing. If a battery would not pay its way in your home, we will say so.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Epsom:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Epsom makes about 484 kWh in June but about 134 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Epsom is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Epsom's homes
Epsom and Ewell’s 31,321 households are 34.9% semi-detached and 26.4% detached (ONS Census 2021, TS044). In the semis around College Road and Woodcote, a side garage or utility room near the consumer unit is the usual spot for a battery, away from bedrooms. A loft is not a default: siting follows the manufacturer’s manual and the BSI’s PAS 63100 fire-safety standard, and an engineer must be able to reach the unit. At the newest end of the stock, homes built from 2012 carry a median EPC score of 83 across the constituency, so a battery there is about using your own generation, not offsetting heat loss.
Purpose-built flats are 20.9% of homes and terraces 13.2%. Flat owners need the freeholder’s consent before anything is fixed or wired in, and the 16.1% of households who rent privately (Census 2021, TS054) need the landlord’s. A terrace without side access or a garage may leave only a rear external wall. With 21 conservation areas in the borough, Epsom Town Centre, Chalk Lane, Woodcote, Stamford Green, College Road and Horton among them, several with Article 4 Directions, keep any outdoor unit off the street-facing elevation and check with the council first; on a listed building, ask whether fixing a unit needs listed building consent.
What a Epsom roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Epsom itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,960 kWh a year in total
- 484 kWh in June and 487 kWh in July
- 134 kWh in December and 148 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Epsom
Epsom is in UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence area, so UKPN is the operator told about a battery fitted here. Under G98, equipment up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified by the installer before commissioning or within 28 days after; larger systems need a G99 application approved before work starts. UKPN’s Smart Connect portal is how approved installers submit those G98 and G99 forms for solar PV and battery storage. A 4 kW inverter, at 17.39 A, already needs the G99 route.
A battery in a Stamford Green garage will not keep the lights on in a power cut by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid; backup has to be designed in, with a backup-capable inverter or gateway and a dedicated circuit, and it is priced as an extra. If your panels went on through one of the Solar Together rounds, adding a battery later means a fresh notification, and the installer checks whether the combined system still sits within G98.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Epsom
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Epsom battery questions
Can I fit a battery in an Epsom flat?
Sometimes, with consent. 20.9% of Epsom and Ewell households live in purpose-built flats (Census 2021, TS044). The freeholder or managing agent must agree before anything is fixed or wired in, and if you rent, as 16.1% of households privately do (TS054), the landlord decides. The unit also needs a location that meets the manufacturer’s manual and the PAS 63100 fire-safety standard. We check both before quoting.
Will a battery keep my Epsom home running in a power cut?
Only if backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, so a battery in a Woodcote or Langley Vale home goes off with the supply. Backup needs a backup-capable inverter or gateway and a dedicated circuit, planned from the start and priced as an extra. Ofgem’s reliability figures for the South Eastern network are printed on this page so you can judge whether it is worth paying for.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Epsom and Ewell?
It depends on your evening use. DVLA counts 2,744 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Epsom and Ewell at the end of June 2026, up from 2,153 a year earlier, and the first three Solar Together rounds fitted 18 EV chargepoints in the borough. Most owners charge directly on an off-peak tariff, leaving the battery for the house. A 7.4 kW charger draws 32 A continuously against a typical 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse, so the supply is checked when both are fitted.
I got panels through Solar Together. Can I add a battery later?
Usually, yes. The first three Solar Together rounds in Epsom and Ewell fitted 157 household solar systems and 132 batteries, so some homes in the borough have panels but no battery. Adding a battery later means a new notification to UK Power Networks: G98 if the property stays within 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), or a G99 application approved before work if the combined system goes over. The Energy Saving Trust notes that fitting both at once costs less than two visits.
