Battery storage — South West London
Battery Storage Surbiton
Home batteries for Surbiton homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Surbiton has to work around the town's two big building types: tall Victorian houses, many terraced or converted, and flats. Across Kingston upon Thames, 29.8% of households live in purpose-built flats and another 6.5% in converted or shared houses (Census 2021), and much of central Surbiton, from St Andrew's Square to the streets by the station, is protected townscape. Where a battery can sit and who has to agree are the real questions here. For the generation side, see solar panels in Surbiton.
DESNZ counts about 1,990 solar PV installations of all sizes across Kingston upon Thames at the end of 2025, 9.27 MW in total. A battery is how a household with panels moves more of that daytime output into the evening. Our battery storage guide sets out the products and how we size them; below we stay with Surbiton, Berrylands, Tolworth and Seething Wells.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Surbiton:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Surbiton makes about 484 kWh in June but about 137 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Surbiton is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network (parts of the town near the boundary may be on London Power Networks); the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Surbiton's homes
Kingston borough's 65,626 households split 31.7% semi-detached, 17.2% terraced, 12.6% detached and 29.8% in purpose-built flats, with 6.5% in converted or shared houses (Census 2021). In Surbiton that means three-storey Victorian Gothic terraces around St Andrew's Square, interwar semis towards Tolworth and Berrylands, and blocks and conversions near the station. A semi with a garage or side return gives the most choice: a garage wall, a utility room or an outside side wall. A mid-terrace with no side access usually means a rear wall or a ground-floor room off the escape route, and on a three-storey house the distance to the meter matters, because a long cable run adds cost.
60.9% of Kingston households own their home, 27.3% rent privately and 11.0% rent socially (Census 2021). Renters need the landlord's written agreement, and in a Victorian house split into flats the freeholder, and often the other leaseholders, have a say over shared walls, the meter cupboard and the cable route. Six conservation areas sit in and around Surbiton, including St Andrew's Square, Oakhill, Southborough and Surbiton Town Centre; there, a unit inside the house or on a rear wall out of view is the sensible design, and for a listed home, ask Kingston Council about listed building consent before anything is fixed.
What a Surbiton roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Surbiton itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,992 kWh a year in total
- 484 kWh in June and 490 kWh in July
- 137 kWh in December and 155 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Surbiton
Surbiton's town centre is on UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks. If you live towards the edge of town, check your own postcode with UK Power Networks' area checker, because the network boundary runs close by. Installers notify UK Power Networks, often through its Smart Connect service: under G98 for equipment rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), before commissioning or within 28 days after, and through a G99 application approved before work starts for anything larger. UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW.
A standard grid-tied battery in a Surbiton house or flat shuts down when the grid does, however full it is, because the inverter must disconnect from a dead network. Backup has to be designed in, with an isolating switch and a protected circuit for chosen essentials. In a flat, where the meter often sits in a shared cupboard, the freeholder's agreement has to cover that switchgear too. If keeping the router and fridge going through an outage in KT5 or KT6 matters to you, say so at survey; we price backup as its own line and will tell you if it is not worth it.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain (central Surbiton only — check your postcode with the network operator if you live near the edge of the area). What a home battery costs in Surbiton
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Surbiton battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Surbiton flat?
Often, with consent. Across Kingston upon Thames 29.8% of households live in purpose-built flats and 6.5% in converted houses (Census 2021). The freeholder, and in a conversion sometimes the other leaseholders, must agree to anything on a shared wall, in the meter cupboard or along a communal cable route; renters need the landlord's written agreement. Inside your own flat the unit must stay off the escape route, so the survey starts with where the meter is.
Will a battery keep my Surbiton home running in a power cut?
Not unless backup is designed in. A standard grid-tied battery switches off with the grid, because the inverter must stop feeding a dead network. Backup adds an isolating switch and a protected circuit for chosen loads, and in a flat that equipment needs space and the freeholder's agreement. We price it separately and say plainly if it is not worth having.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Kingston upon Thames?
It can be, if the car is home in the evening rather than charging overnight. DVLA records 5,029 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Kingston upon Thames (end of June 2026), up from 4,125 a year earlier. Overnight off-peak charging already uses cheaper electricity, so the battery case then rests on your evening use. Charger and battery are both notified to the network, so we design them together.
Which network do I tell about a battery in KT5 or KT6?
Surbiton's town centre is on UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks, and the boundary is close, so check your postcode with UK Power Networks' area checker. Your installer makes the notification: G98 up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), before commissioning or within 28 days after; G99, approved before work, above that. UK Power Networks says it charges nothing unless your supply needs upgrading.
