Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Esher
Home batteries for Esher homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Esher is mostly a question about larger houses and long evenings. In Esher ward 41.0% of homes are detached and another 23.7% semi-detached (Census 2021), which usually means a garage, a utility room or a side wall where a battery can sit, and a household that keeps using electricity well after the panels stop. If you already have panels, or are weighing them up, start with what solar panels in Esher would generate. This page covers the storage half: where the unit goes in KT10 homes, what the network operator needs to hear, and what a battery does and does not do when the power goes off.
Elmbridge had about 2,574 solar PV installations of all sizes on DESNZ's end-of-2025 count, and any home with panels on the roof can add storage to keep more of that daytime output for after dark. Our battery storage guide explains the products and how sizing works; here we keep to Esher itself, from West End and Esher Green to the streets towards Claygate and Hinchley Wood, and to the two conservation areas that shape where visible equipment can go.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Esher:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Esher makes about 485 kWh in June but about 136 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Esher is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Esher's homes
Esher ward counted 3,583 dwellings at the 2021 Census: 1,469 detached (41.0%), 23.7% semi-detached, 13.7% terraced and 16.9% in purpose-built flats. In the detached and semi-detached majority, the usual places for a battery are an integral or side garage, a utility room near the consumer unit, or a side or rear outside wall. We rarely suggest a loft, where summer heat and awkward access for servicing count against it. On Esher's terraces, often with no side access, the choice narrows to a rear wall or a ground-floor room that is not an escape route, with the cable run to the meter planned at survey.
Tenure makes most Esher decisions simple: 69.2% of the ward's households own their home, 34.2% outright and 35.0% with a mortgage (Census 2021). The 16.7% who rent privately and 13.3% in social housing need the landlord's written agreement first, and flat owners need the freeholder's consent before anything is fixed to a shared wall or run through a communal area. In the Esher Conservation Area around the A307 and in West End, keep the battery indoors or on a wall that cannot be seen from the street; if your house is listed, ask Elmbridge about listed building consent before anything is fixed, inside or out.
What a Esher roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Esher itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,989 kWh a year in total
- 485 kWh in June and 488 kWh in July
- 136 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Esher
Esher's town centre sits in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks area, about 4.4 km inside it, and KT10 battery installations are notified to UK Power Networks. If the equipment that can feed your supply is rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), your installer notifies under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days after it. Above that, a G99 application has to be approved before work starts, and a 4 kW inverter is already over the line at 17.39 A. UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW, so an export limit is worth discussing if a larger Esher home needs a bigger inverter.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid, even with a full charge and sun on the roof: the inverter must stop feeding a dead network. Keeping lights, the fridge or a boiler pump running in an Esher home needs backup designed in from the start, with a switch that isolates the house from the grid and a protected circuit for the essentials you choose. In the detached houses that make up 41.0% of Esher ward, the useful question is which circuits are worth protecting, not whether the whole house can run. We price backup as its own line and tell you whether it is worth it for how you live.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. Two conservation areas cover parts of Esher: the Esher Conservation Area over the historic core along the former London to Portsmouth road, now the A307 (designated 31 July 1973, extended 27 February 2008), and West End (designated 25 April 1977). Equipment visible from the street there deserves a planning check.

What a home battery costs in Esher
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Esher battery questions
Where would a battery go in a detached Esher house?
Usually in the garage, in a utility room near the consumer unit, or on a side or rear outside wall. Esher ward is 41.0% detached and 23.7% semi-detached (Census 2021), so most homes have at least one of those. We keep batteries off escape routes such as hallways and rarely use a loft, because of summer heat and access for servicing. In the Esher and West End conservation areas a garage or rear-wall position also keeps the street scene unchanged.
Will a battery keep my Esher home running in a power cut?
Not a standard one. A grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, because its inverter must stop feeding a dead network, so a full battery sits idle until the supply returns. Backup needs extra equipment designed in from the start: an isolating switch and a protected circuit for the loads you pick. We price it as a separate line and will say if it is not worth it for your home.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Elmbridge?
It depends on when the car charges. DVLA records 6,523 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Elmbridge (end of June 2026), up from 5,249 a year earlier. If yours charges overnight on an off-peak tariff, the car already uses cheaper electricity and the battery case rests on the house's evening load. A 7.4 kW home charger draws 32 A continuously, and the installer notifies the network about both charger and battery, so we design the two together.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in KT10?
Your installer does it, not you. Up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) it is a G98 notification, made before commissioning or within 28 days after. Above that, a G99 application must be approved before installation; a 4 kW inverter is 17.39 A, just over the line. UK Power Networks says installations with maximum export under 5 kW after any export limitation are approved automatically, and it charges nothing unless your supply needs upgrading.
