Battery Storage Twickenham
Home batteries for Twickenham homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Twickenham means working with older, tighter houses. Richmond upon Thames has far more terraced homes (26.6%) than detached (8.3%), and 8.8% of households live in converted or shared houses (Census 2021): the cottage terraces around Twickenham Green, Victorian conversions in St Margarets and interwar homes out towards Whitton and Fulwell. Space by the meter, side access and who owns the walls matter more here than battery size. For the panels themselves, see solar panels in Twickenham.
Richmond upon Thames had about 2,608 solar PV installations of all sizes, 10.15 MW in total, at the end of 2025 (DESNZ). For homes with panels, a battery keeps more of the day's output for the evening. Our battery storage guide explains the products and sizing. This page stays with Twickenham, TW1 and TW2, from Strawberry Hill and East Twickenham to Whitton.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Twickenham:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Twickenham makes about 483 kWh in June but about 138 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Twickenham is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network (parts of the town near the boundary may be on Southern Electric Power Distribution); the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Twickenham's homes
Richmond's 80,705 households split 28.2% purpose-built flats, 26.6% terraced, 25.0% semi-detached and 8.3% detached, with 8.8% in converted or shared houses (Census 2021). In a Twickenham terrace with no side access, a battery usually goes on the rear wall or in a ground-floor room that is not the escape route, close enough to the meter to keep the cable run short; a meter in a cellar or the front room changes the plan. The semis of Whitton and Fulwell are easier, often with a side passage or garage wall to use. Lofts are rarely a good idea, since heat and servicing access count against them.
62.4% of Richmond borough households own their home and 24.7% rent privately (Census 2021), so a quarter need the landlord's written agreement, and in a converted house the freeholder, and sometimes other leaseholders, control the shared walls and meter area. Planning is the other Twickenham check. Richmond has 72 conservation areas, Twickenham Green, Twickenham Riverside and Queen's Road among them, and an Article 4(2) Direction covers 24 to 33 First Cross Road. On streets like these, keep the battery indoors or on a rear wall out of public view, and ask the council before anything goes on a front elevation; a listed house needs listed building consent for works that affect its character.
What a Twickenham roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Twickenham itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 3,991 kWh a year in total
- 483 kWh in June and 487 kWh in July
- 138 kWh in December and 156 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Twickenham
Twickenham's town centre is on UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks. If you live towards the edge of town, put your postcode into UK Power Networks' area checker to confirm which network serves your street. Your installer notifies the operator before the battery goes live: under G98 for equipment rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW), before commissioning or within 28 days after; under G99, approved in advance, for anything larger, which includes a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A. UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW, and charges nothing unless the supply needs upgrading.
In a power cut, a standard grid-tied battery in a Twickenham home shuts down with the grid, however full it is: the inverter must stop feeding a dead network. Backup has to be designed in, with an isolating switch and a protected circuit for the loads you pick, and in a narrow terrace the question is often whether there is room by the meter for the extra switchgear. If keeping the fridge and router on during an outage in TW1 or TW2 matters to you, say so at survey; we price backup separately and will tell you if it is not worth it.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain (central Twickenham only — check your postcode with the network operator if you live near the edge of the area). What a home battery costs in Twickenham
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Twickenham battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Twickenham terrace or converted flat?
Usually, with planning around space and consent. Richmond upon Thames has 26.6% terraced homes and 8.8% converted or shared houses (Census 2021). In a terrace with no side access the unit goes on the rear wall or in a ground-floor room off the escape route. In a converted flat the freeholder, and sometimes other leaseholders, must agree to anything on shared walls or in the meter area.
Will a battery keep my Twickenham home running in a power cut?
Not a standard one. A grid-tied battery switches off with the grid, because its inverter must disconnect from a dead network. Backup needs an isolating switch and a protected circuit for chosen loads, and in a narrow terrace we check there is room for that switchgear by the meter. We price it separately and say if it is not worth it.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Richmond upon Thames?
It can be, depending on when you charge. DVLA records 6,425 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Richmond upon Thames (end of June 2026), up from 5,499 a year earlier. Overnight off-peak charging already uses cheaper electricity, so the battery then has to earn its keep on your evening use. Charger and battery are each notified to the network, so we design them together.
Which network do I tell about a battery in TW1 or TW2?
For the town centre it is UK Power Networks: Twickenham sits in its South Eastern Power Networks area, close to the licence boundary, so confirm your own TW1 or TW2 postcode with UK Power Networks' area checker. Whichever network serves your street, the installer, not you, does the paperwork: a G98 notification for equipment up to 3.68 kW (16 A per phase), before commissioning or within 28 days after, or a G99 approval in advance for larger kit such as a 4 kW inverter.
