EV Charger Installation Barnet
Home EV chargers for Barnet driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Barnet changes from ward to ward. In High Barnet, 23.7% of households live in detached houses and 24.7% in semis, and a driveway charger is often straightforward; in Barnet Vale, next door, 37.2% live in purpose-built flats, where an allocated space and a freeholder's agreement come first. Underhill has the most terraces of the four town wards, at 22.6%, and there the question is the pavement. Our home EV charger installation page sets out the kit and the national grant rules; this page covers EN4 and EN5.
Across the London Borough of Barnet, DVLA counts 12,097 privately kept plug-in vehicles at the end of June 2026, up from 10,089 a year earlier, about 20% more (our arithmetic); that is borough-wide, not the town alone. If you are adding a charger, look at the roof too: solar panels in Barnet covers what a High Barnet or East Barnet roof could generate, and battery storage in Barnet covers whether a house battery adds anything. The charger we fit is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Barnet:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Barnet is on UK Power Networks's Eastern Power Networks network; the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 12,097 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Barnet (2026 Q2), up from 10,089 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Barnet
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Supply and parking check
Your main fuse, consumer unit and earthing, and where you park in Barnet: a driveway or garage, or an on-street space that needs the council's say-so.
- Step 2
A written quote
Charger position, cable route and any fuse or supply work, itemised. A 7 kW charger draws about 32 A, so the survey checks the supply before anything is promised.
- Step 3
Installation
Fitting, testing and smart-charging set-up, with Eastern Power Networks told about the charger where the rules require it.
- Step 4
Handover
Off-peak and solar-matched charging explained, the app set up with you, and the certificates and warranty left with you.
Where a charger goes in Barnet's homes
High Barnet is the house-heavy end, with 67.6% of households owning their home (36.0% outright) against 52.7% across the borough, and East Barnet is led by semis at 36.4%. In those houses the charger usually goes on the wall nearest the drive or in the garage, with a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit; the owner decides, and pays in full, since the grant for owner-occupied houses closed in April 2022 and chargers carry 20% VAT. In Underhill's terraces, where the car is often on the road, a cable across the pavement needs Barnet Council's agreement as highway authority, and the government's on-street grant of up to £500 applies only with an approved cross-pavement solution, subject to the council's rules. Ask the council what it allows on your street first. If your EN5 address is on the Hertsmere side, Hertfordshire's councils set those rules, not Barnet.
Barnet Vale's flats and Underhill's social housing (24.0% of households rent socially) put the decision partly in other hands: the freeholder, managing agent or landlord must agree in writing before a circuit is run to a parking space. Renters and people who own and live in a flat can get 75% of the purchase and installation cost, up to £500 per socket, where the home has private off-street or allocated parking; the scheme runs to 31 March 2027 and the claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage. Wood Street and Monken Hadley are among Barnet's 16 conservation areas and both carry Article 4 directions; there, and on listed buildings, ask the council before fixing a charger to a street-facing wall.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Barnet
Barnet's town centre sits in UK Power Networks' Eastern Power Networks area rather than its London Power Networks area, though UKPN is the operator either way, and approved installers notify it through Smart Connect, which takes EV chargepoint forms. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously, and household main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A. Load management, a sensor on the incoming supply that turns the charger down while the house is busy, usually avoids an upgrade. UKPN says it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 A to 80 or 100 A where it is needed, and that a looped supply shared with a neighbour, something the survey checks in any Underhill or High Barnet terrace, has to be re-planned with both households and may carry a charge.
Every new home charger sold in Great Britain has had to be smart since 30 June 2022; the SmartBee-M schedules into off-peak hours by default and connects over WiFi or Ethernet. With panels and a compatible set-up, surplus daytime solar can go into the car. PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing array in Barnet at about 476 kWh in June, roughly 16 kWh a day, and about 140 kWh in December, roughly 4.5 kWh a day (our arithmetic). In a High Barnet house with the car at home on a summer weekend, that surplus is worth catching; in December, overnight charging does most of the work.
Can a Barnet roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Barnet for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 476 kWh in June and about 140 kWh in December, 3,944 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.5 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Barnet
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Barnet home arrives itemised after a survey.

Barnet EV charger questions
Can I get a charger at an Underhill terrace with on-street parking?
Only with the council's agreement. Underhill has the most terraces of the four town wards, 22.6% (Census 2021), and a cable across the pavement needs Barnet Council's consent as highway authority, or Hertfordshire's councils' if your EN5 address is on the Hertsmere side. The government's on-street grant of up to £500 applies only with an approved cross-pavement solution, subject to the council's rules, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer. Ask the council what it allows; if a home charger is not workable, we will tell you.
Can I have a charger in a Barnet Vale flat?
If you have a parking space of your own. Barnet Vale ward is 37.2% purpose-built flats (Census 2021). The freeholder or managing agent must agree in writing to a circuit run to your space. Flat owners who live there, and renters, can get 75% of the cost up to £500 per socket with private off-street or allocated parking, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Will my Barnet fuse take a 7 kW charger?
Usually, with load management. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously and household main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A. UK Power Networks, whose Eastern Power Networks area takes in Barnet's town centre, says it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 A to 80 or 100 A where needed. Any extra work appears as a line on your written quote.
Is there a grant for a charger in the London Borough of Barnet?
For renters and flat owners with private off-street or allocated parking, yes: 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, until 31 March 2027. Households with on-street parking only can get up to £500 with an approved cross-pavement solution, subject to the council's rules. Owners of houses with a drive in High Barnet or East Barnet get nothing, since that scheme closed in April 2022. Claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer.
