EV Charger Installation Godalming
Home EV chargers for Godalming driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Godalming has an option many towns lack. Surrey County Council now offers cable gullies, a channel set into the pavement, to eligible residents without off-street parking, so a terrace in the town centre or Farncombe with the car outside on the street is no longer automatically ruled out. For the semis and detached houses that make up 59.8% of Godalming's households (our sum of the five wards, Census 2021), a drive and a side wall make it a simpler job. Our home EV charger installation guide explains the kit and the grants.
The town that had the world's first public electricity supply, from a waterwheel at Westbrook Mill in 1881, now has many more plug-in cars: DVLA records 5,670 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Waverley at the end of June 2026, up from 4,375 a year earlier. We fit the EnSmart SmartBee-M, a 7 kW smart charger in tethered or socketed form. For the roof, see solar panels in Godalming, and for storing daytime power, battery storage in Godalming.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Godalming:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Godalming is on SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution network (homes near the edge of the area may be on South Eastern Power Networks); the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 5,670 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Waverley (2026 Q2), up from 4,375 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Godalming
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Supply and parking check
Your main fuse, consumer unit and earthing, and where you park in Godalming: a driveway or garage, or an on-street space that needs the council's say-so.
- Step 2
A written quote
Charger position, cable route and any fuse or supply work, itemised. A 7 kW charger draws about 32 A, so the survey checks the supply before anything is promised.
- Step 3

Where a charger goes in Godalming's homes
Semis are 30.7% and detached houses 29.1% of the 9,654 households across Godalming's five wards, and 66.9% own their home. On Ockford Ridge, Aaron's Hill and Catteshall the charger usually goes on the side wall or garage beside the drive, with a dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit. Godalming's hills add a twist: where the garage sits below or above the house, the cable route between meter and car is the item that moves the price. Terraces are 18.4% of households, and for those with on-street parking only, Surrey's cable gully scheme is the route. Its page lists the conditions: the footway is publicly maintained and fully paved to the kerb, you can park legally within one car length of the gully, the charger can go on the front of the house, and you own the property or have the landlord's written permission. The fee is £499, including a £100 non-refundable deposit, with a two-year council warranty and £4.99 a month to Kerbo Charge from year three. Surrey also notes that a charger at a home without off-street parking may need planning permission, so check with Waverley Borough Council.
The town centre needs more care. 125 listed buildings stand in the Town Centre Conservation Area, and anything fixed to a listed building's fabric may need listed building consent; a front-wall charger for a gully may be the hardest case of all. Flats, 15.8% purpose-built and 3.3% converted across the wards, need the freeholder's written consent for a charger in an allocated bay, and the 18.6% of households renting privately need the landlord's. Renters and people who own and live in a flat are who the OZEV chargepoint grant is for, 75% of the cost up to £500 per socket with private off-street or allocated parking, and there is a separate OZEV grant of up to £500 towards a chargepoint installed with an approved cross-pavement solution such as Surrey's gully. The claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Godalming
The town centre sits in SSEN Distribution's Southern Electric Power Distribution licence area, but it is only about 1.6 km from UK Power Networks' South Eastern network, so some Godalming addresses may be on UKPN instead. Check yours with the Energy Networks Association's postcode lookup; whichever it is, the installer notifies the operator of the new chargepoint. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously, and most homes have a 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse; on a 60 A supply the charger alone takes more than half (our arithmetic). Load management, a sensor that throttles the charger when the shower or oven is on, usually avoids a supply upgrade; where it cannot, the upgrade is the network operator's work and comes first.
Smart charging has been the legal standard for new home chargepoints since 30 June 2022, with off-peak hours as the default. With panels, the car can take what the house does not use: at the town-centre point, PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array in Godalming about 489 kWh in June, roughly 16.3 kWh a day, and about 74 kWh in December, about 2.4 kWh a day (our arithmetic), low because the point sits in the Wey valley, where the terrain horizon cuts winter sun. That December figure is why winter charging in Godalming comes from the off-peak rate, not the roof.
Can a Godalming roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Godalming for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 489 kWh in June and about 74 kWh in December, 3,859 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 2.4 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Godalming
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Godalming home arrives itemised after a survey.

Godalming EV charger questions
Can I get a charger at a Godalming terrace with on-street parking?
Possibly, through Surrey County Council's cable gully scheme. The council's page sets the conditions: a publicly maintained footway paved to the kerb, legal parking within one car length of the gully, a charger that can go on the front of the house, and ownership or the landlord's written permission. The fee is £499, including a £100 non-refundable deposit, then £4.99 a month to Kerbo Charge from year three. A separate OZEV grant of up to £500 can go towards the chargepoint itself, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Can I fit a charger to a listed house in Godalming?
Sometimes, but ask first. 125 listed buildings stand in the Town Centre Conservation Area, and fixing a charger to a listed building's fabric may need listed building consent from Waverley Borough Council. A charger in a rear garage or on an outbuilding is usually easier to agree than one on a street elevation. Surrey also notes that a home charger at a property without off-street parking may need planning permission, so speak to Waverley's planners before committing.
Will my Godalming fuse take a 7 kW charger?
Usually. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A continuously and most homes have a 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse. The survey totals the evening load; load management lets the charger use only the spare headroom. If an upgrade is still needed, it is the network operator's job: SSEN for the town centre, though some Godalming addresses near the boundary may be on UK Power Networks, so check your postcode.
Can solar charge my car in Godalming in winter?
Very little. At the town-centre point, in the Wey valley, PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array about 74 kWh in December, around 2.4 kWh a day, most of which the house uses; homes on higher ground or with an open southern view do better. June is about 489 kWh, roughly 16.3 kWh a day (our arithmetic), which is when diverting surplus into the car is worthwhile. In winter the smart charger's off-peak schedule does the charging.
