Tesla Powerwall in Hertfordshire
What Tesla Powerwall means for a Hertfordshire home, how it compares with the systems we fit, and a written answer on supply, installation and warranty if it is the one you want.
Hertfordshire has two local rules that matter for a Tesla Powerwall 3 before any network form is filled in. In Letchworth Garden City the Heritage Foundation says battery storage units need its consent and must not be visible from the public realm, and in Welwyn Garden City the Estate Management Scheme asks homes inside it to get consent before altering the outside. This page covers those, the new-town terraces and older-town detached houses, and the county’s own figures. For roofs, see solar panels in Hertfordshire; for storage generally, our battery storage guide; and for the towns, battery storage in Letchworth, Stevenage and Harpenden.
The battery system in HCE’s own job photos is EnSmart; if Tesla Powerwall is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches. The Tesla warranty depends on the answer. It applies to a Powerwall “purchased from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer”, and installation or commissioning by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla certified installer is listed among the grounds on which cover may be voided. Check any Hertfordshire company quoting you, HCE included, in Tesla’s certified-installer finder.
Quick answer
Tesla Powerwall in Hertfordshire:
- Our own work: the battery systems in HCE's own job photos are EnSmart; if Tesla Powerwall is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches.
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; a quote for your home comes from a survey of your usage.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: every battery is notified to, or approved by, the local network operator depending on its size (G98 or G99); the installer handles it.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup has to be designed in and is never assumed.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

How a home battery gets fitted in Hertfordshire
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Your usage, not a guess
We look at when your Hertfordshire home uses power, especially evenings, and your tariff, because that, not the sunniest month, decides the battery size.
- Step 2
Sizing and siting
Where the unit can go (garage, utility room or an outside wall, as the manufacturer allows), whether it pairs with existing panels, and a written, itemised quote.
- Step 3
Installation and notification
Fitting and commissioning, with the battery notified to or approved by your network operator depending on its size. Backup in a power cut only if it is designed in.
- Step 4
Settings and handover
Charge and discharge set up around your tariff, the app explained, and the warranty documents in your hand.
How Tesla Powerwall fits Hertfordshire homes
The new towns are terraced: 44.9% of households in Stevenage’s built-up area, 37.4% in Welwyn Garden City’s and 33.3% in Letchworth’s live in terraced houses (Census 2021). On a mid-terrace with no side access, a Powerwall, 1105 × 609 × 193 mm and 130 kg, usually goes on an inside wall near the meter or the floor of a utility space, carried in by two people. In Letchworth and inside Welwyn’s Estate Management Scheme, an indoor position has a second advantage: it leaves the outside of the house unchanged, which is what both bodies govern. A rear outside wall is physically fine for an IP55-rated unit, but in those two towns put it to the Foundation or the Scheme first.
The older towns lean the other way. Across Harpenden’s four wards 39.7% of households live in detached houses, and Potters Bar is 46.5% semi-detached, so a garage or utility room is usually available. A loft is not a default there for a 130 kg unit: joists, temperature and service access come first under Tesla’s installation manual. All fourteen town centres on our Hertfordshire pages are in UK Power Networks’ Eastern Power Networks area. A Powerwall set at 3.68 kW or below is notified under G98 within 28 days; a higher setting needs G99 approval before work, and UK Power Networks says it automatically approves applications whose maximum export, after any export limitation, is under 5 kW.
Hertfordshire: sunshine, the grid and local uptake
PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array between about 133 kWh (St Albans) and 141 kWh (Potters Bar) in December, and between about 476 kWh (Borehamwood and Watford) and 487 kWh (Bishop’s Stortford) in June across the fourteen towns we cover. That is about 4.3 to 4.5 kWh a day in December and 15.9 to 16.2 kWh in June (our arithmetic), so a Powerwall’s 13.5 kWh can fill from the roof in summer and needs a tariff plan for winter.
DESNZ records 24,567 solar PV installations across the nine Hertfordshire councils behind those towns at the end of 2025 (our sum), with East Hertfordshire at 4,437 and North Hertfordshire at 4,214. DVLA counts 35,306 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the same councils at the end of June 2026, up from 25,976 a year earlier (our sum). Ofgem’s 2024/25 figures for Eastern Power Networks show about 44.6 supply interruptions per 100 customers and 32.5 minutes lost per customer, against 39.7 and 35.1 across all GB licence areas. A Powerwall supplies the home during an outage only when a Backup Gateway 2 is part of the installation.

Tesla Powerwall in Hertfordshire: questions
Does the Letchworth Heritage Foundation need to approve a Powerwall?
Its solar design principles, revised in May 2026, say battery storage units need consent and must not be visible from the public realm. A Powerwall in a garage or utility room is the simplest way to meet that; a unit on an outside wall should go to the Foundation before it is fitted. The Foundation’s consent is separate from planning permission.
Can a Powerwall 3 go in a Stevenage terrace?
Often, indoors. At 193 mm deep it can go on an inside wall near the meter or stand in a utility space, and two people carry the 130 kg unit in. Hallways are escape routes and best kept clear. If you rent from the council or a housing association, the landlord has to agree first.
How does UK Power Networks approve a Powerwall in Hertfordshire?
A Powerwall set at 3.68 kW or below is notified within 28 days of commissioning under G98. A higher output needs a G99 approval before work starts, and UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW. It charges the homeowner nothing unless the supply needs upgrading. The installer makes the application.
