Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Horley
Home batteries for Horley homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Horley usually means a semi-detached or detached house built in the last few decades. In the three Horley wards, 33.8% of households lived in semis and 28.2% in detached houses at the 2021 Census. The Horley Master Plan has added Westvale Park, with 1,130 homes occupied by May 2022, and The Acres next to Langshott. Newer homes tend to have tidy consumer units and garages or utility rooms close by, which keeps an installation simple. Start with what solar panels in Horley would generate on your roof, then size storage to your evening use.
Ownership makes the decision easier here. 70.4% of Horley households own their home outright or with a mortgage, and a further 2.8% are in shared ownership. The checks that matter are on the older streets: Church Road, Massetts Road and Meath Green are conservation areas, where external changes need more care. Our main battery storage guide covers products and sizing.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Horley:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Horley makes about 491 kWh in June but about 138 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Horley is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Horley's homes
The 2021 Census counted 12,436 households across Horley Central & South, Horley East & Salfords and Horley West & Sidlow: 33.8% semi-detached, 28.2% detached, 14.5% terraced and 19.5% in purpose-built flats. 32.5% own outright, 38.0% have a mortgage, 2.8% are in shared ownership, 16.6% rent privately and 10.2% rent socially (ONS Census 2021, TS044 and TS054). On a Westvale Park or The Acres house, the garage or a utility room near the consumer unit is the obvious spot. Some new-build plots have little wall space beside the meter, so we check where the cable would run. In the older semis of Court Lodge and Meath Green, a side wall by the passage often works. A loft suits some units, not others.
The 19.5% of households in flats need the freeholder's or managing agent's consent, and shared owners need the housing association's agreement as well. On the Edwardian villas of Massetts Road, and in the Church Road and Meath Green conservation areas, keep a battery inside a garage or the house where you can. Reigate & Banstead has served Article 4 directions on most of its conservation areas, controlling external changes to houses, so a unit fixed to an outside wall on those streets is worth checking with the council first. On a listed building anywhere in the town, fixings are a matter for the council's conservation team before any work starts.
What a Horley roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Horley itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,021 kWh a year in total
- 491 kWh in June and 494 kWh in July
- 138 kWh in December and 153 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Horley
Horley is in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks licence area, and the installer deals with UKPN for you. A type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) falls under G98 and is notified within 28 days of commissioning. Anything above that needs a G99 application approved before installation; a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A is just over the line. UK Power Networks says it automatically approves applications where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW. That is relevant on a Westvale Park roof where a battery and inverter are being added at the same time.
A standard grid-tied battery shuts down in a power cut. It does not keep a Langshott semi running just because the battery is charged. Backup has to be designed in, with extra isolation hardware and a short list of essential circuits, and it costs more. Whether your house is in Horley Row or Westvale Park, UK Power Networks notes that a supply sometimes needs upgrading before new equipment can be added. We check that at survey and tell you before you commit.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Horley
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Horley battery questions
Can I add a battery to a new-build house at Westvale Park or The Acres?
Usually, yes. Newer homes tend to have modern consumer units and a garage or utility room close by. We check wall space by the meter, the cable route and, if the house already has panels, whether the existing inverter can work with a battery or needs a hybrid unit. On a leasehold or shared-ownership home, you will need the freeholder's or housing association's agreement.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery in Horley?
Your installer does. Horley is in UKPN's South Eastern Power Networks area. Systems up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) are notified within 28 days under G98; larger ones need G99 approval before installation. UKPN says it automatically approves applications with maximum export under 5 kW after any export limitation.
Will a battery keep my Horley home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid. Backup needs extra isolation hardware and a choice of essential circuits, at extra cost. We price it separately so you can decide.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Reigate and Banstead?
DVLA counts 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles in the borough at the end of June 2026, up from 4,051 a year earlier. Most are charged overnight on an off-peak tariff straight from the grid. A home battery helps when it stores cheap overnight electricity, or daytime solar, for the evening peak. Whether that pays depends on your tariff and usage, which the survey measures.
