Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Reigate
Home batteries for Reigate homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Reigate suits the town's housing well. Across Reigate and Banstead, semi-detached (29.6%) and detached homes (27.9%) are the two most common types, and 71.1% of households own their home (Census 2021), so most people asking about a battery have a garage or utility room to put it in and the authority to decide. The limits come from heritage rather than space: the town centre is a conservation area, and Article 4 directions cover most of the borough's conservation areas. If you are starting from scratch, see solar panels in Reigate first.
Reigate and Banstead had about 4,475 solar PV installations of all sizes, 17.86 MW in total, at the end of 2025 (DESNZ), and with roughly 70% of the borough in the Green Belt, new solar here mostly means rooftops. A battery lets a rooftop system cover more of the evening. Our battery storage guide covers the products and sizing; this page is about Reigate itself, from Wray Common and South Park to Woodhatch, Dovers Green and Reigate Heath.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Reigate:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Reigate makes about 492 kWh in June but about 137 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Reigate is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Reigate's homes
The borough's 59,849 households (Census 2021) include 17,720 in semi-detached houses, 16,679 detached, 9,596 terraced and 12,839 in purpose-built flats. In the semis and detached houses around South Park, Woodhatch and Reigate Heath, a battery normally goes on a garage wall, in a utility room close to the consumer unit or on a side elevation. We rarely use a loft, where summer heat and awkward access for servicing count against it. Terraced houses near the town centre, often with no side access, usually take the unit on a rear wall or in a ground-floor room away from the escape route.
With 71.1% of households owning their home and 15.7% renting privately (Census 2021), most Reigate decisions sit with the occupier, though tenants need the landlord's written consent and flat owners the freeholder's. Heritage is the Reigate-specific check. The town centre conservation area, the 2024 additions such as Blanford Road and the extended Wray Common area, and Article 4 directions on most of the borough's conservation areas all mean a unit on a street-facing wall deserves a word with the council first; indoors or on a rear wall, the street scene does not change. For a listed house, ask about listed building consent before anything is fixed.
What a Reigate roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Reigate itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,033 kWh a year in total
- 492 kWh in June and 496 kWh in July
- 137 kWh in December and 152 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Reigate
Reigate's town centre is well inside UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks area, about 15.6 km from the next licence area, so RH2 battery installations are notified to UK Power Networks. A battery, with or without panels, is covered by the same rules as generation: equipment rated up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under G98, before commissioning or within 28 days after, and anything above that needs G99 approval before work starts, which a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A already triggers. UK Power Networks says it approves automatically where maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW, and that it charges nothing unless your supply needs upgrading first.
A standard grid-tied battery switches off in a power cut, even on a bright day with the panels producing, because the inverter must disconnect from the network until it returns. If you want the lights, fridge and broadband to carry on in a Reigate home through an outage, backup has to be designed in, with an isolation switch and a circuit for the loads you choose. Whether you are in a terrace off the High Street or a detached house out at Sidlow, the design starts from which circuits matter to you. We price backup separately and will say if it does not add up.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Reigate
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Reigate battery questions
Where does a battery go in a Reigate semi or detached house?
Usually on a garage wall, in a utility room near the consumer unit, or on a side wall. Semi-detached and detached houses are the two biggest groups in Reigate and Banstead, 17,720 and 16,679 households at the 2021 Census. We keep batteries off escape routes such as the hall and rarely use a loft. A rear or garage position also keeps you clear of street-scene questions in the conservation areas.
Will a battery keep my Reigate home running in a power cut?
A standard grid-tied battery will not: it shuts down with the grid, because the inverter must stop feeding a dead network. Backup is a separate design, with an isolation switch and a protected circuit for chosen loads such as lights, fridge and router. It adds cost, is best planned with the battery, and we will say if it is not worth it for you.
Is a battery worth it with an EV in Reigate and Banstead?
It depends on your charging pattern. DVLA records 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Reigate and Banstead (end of June 2026), up from 4,051 a year earlier. If the car charges overnight on an off-peak tariff, a battery has to justify itself on the house's evening use; if the car is at home in the day, panels can charge it directly. A 7.4 kW charger draws 32 A continuously, so we check the main fuse and design both together.
Do I need planning permission for a battery in a Reigate conservation area?
For a unit inside the house or garage, nothing changes outside. On an outside wall, Reigate is a town to check first: the town centre is a conservation area, the 2024 review added more, including Blanford Road, and Article 4 directions cover most of the borough's conservation areas. Keep the unit off street-facing walls and ask the council if in doubt. Listed buildings need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
