Battery storage — Surrey
Battery Storage Redhill
Home batteries for Redhill homes, with or without solar panels — sized from your actual usage, with the costs, the seasons and the power-cut reality explained before you commit to anything.
Battery storage in Redhill has to work for a town centre where flats are the single biggest housing type. In the Redhill East and Redhill West & Wray Common wards, 36.9% of households lived in purpose-built flats at the 2021 Census, more than in semis (23.5%) or terraces (17.9%). Add the Victorian terraces around St John's and newer blocks such as The Rise on Marketfield Way, and the first question is often whether a battery can go anywhere at all. Where you have your own roof, start with what solar panels in Redhill would generate.
For houses, the answer is usually yes. Redhill is on UK Power Networks' South Eastern network, which automatically approves small systems whose export stays under 5 kW. PVGIS estimates that a 4 kWp south-facing array here makes about 492 kWh in June and about 137 kWh in December, so a battery is sized for your evenings, not for winter. Our main battery storage guide covers products and how sizing works.
Quick answer
Battery storage in Redhill:
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; your own figure comes from a survey of your usage.
- Seasons: PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Redhill makes about 492 kWh in June but about 137 kWh in December — size the battery for your evenings, not for summer.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: central Redhill is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the installer notifies or applies to the operator depending on the system's size.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup needs to be designed in from the start, and we will tell you whether it is worth it.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

Where a battery fits in Redhill's homes
The 2021 Census counted 8,005 households across Redhill East and Redhill West & Wray Common: 36.9% in purpose-built flats, 23.5% semi-detached, 17.9% terraced and 16.0% detached. Tenure is mixed: 26.5% own outright, 32.5% have a mortgage, 2.7% are in shared ownership, 24.5% rent privately and 13.7% rent socially (ONS Census 2021, TS044 and TS054). In the semis and detached houses towards Earlswood and Whitebushes, a garage, utility room or side wall near the meter is the usual spot. The Victorian terraces near St John's and the station often have no side access; a battery there may go under the stairs or near the consumer unit, if the manufacturer allows, and a loft only suits some units.
For the flats at The Rise and the other town-centre blocks, and the shared-ownership homes, a battery needs the freeholder's or housing association's consent, and the realistic location is often a private garage or plant space rather than the flat itself. Redhill's conservation areas, the town centre, Redstone Hill and St John's, add a planning check: Reigate & Banstead has served Article 4 directions on most of its conservation areas, controlling external changes to houses. On those streets, a battery inside a garage or the house is simpler than an external unit, and anything fixed to the outside wall is worth checking with the council first.
What a Redhill roof generates through the year
A battery earns its keep by moving daytime generation into the evening, so the shape of the year matters more than the annual total. We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Redhill itself, for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south with 14% system losses:
- 4,031 kWh a year in total
- 492 kWh in June and 496 kWh in July
- 137 kWh in December and 152 kWh in January
In summer a modest array fills a battery most days; in midwinter it rarely will, and the battery's job shifts to storing cheaper off-peak electricity if your tariff offers it. That is why we size storage from your evening usage and tariff, not from the sunniest month. East- or west-facing roofs and shading change these figures more than the town does — which is what the survey measures.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023, monthly output, run 15 October 2026.
The grid and power cuts in Redhill
Redhill sits in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks licence area, and the installer deals with UKPN on your behalf. Under G98, a type-tested system up to and including 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) is notified within 28 days of commissioning; above that, a G99 application is approved before work starts, and a 4 kW inverter at 17.39 A is just over the line. UK Power Networks says it automatically approves applications where the maximum export after any export limitation is under 5 kW. Its Smart Connect service, open only to approved installers, takes notifications within 28 days for houses up to 69 kVA whose supply can take the equipment.
None of that changes what happens in a power cut. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does, in a flat at The Rise or a semi in Earlswood alike. Backup has to be designed in, with extra isolation hardware and a choice of circuits to keep running. UK Power Networks also notes that, in some cases, a supply needs upgrading before new equipment can be added. If the survey shows that, we tell you before you commit.
Ofgem's reported 2024/25 figures for South Eastern Power Networks show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and about 30.4 minutes lost per customer over the year, against 39.7 and 35.1 across Great Britain. What a home battery costs in Redhill
The honest national anchor is the Energy Saving Trust's: home battery storage ranges from £1,500 to £10,000, a 5 kWh system costs around £4,600, and a typical home system might be 10 kWh. Energy Saving Trust also says there is no exact formula — sizing comes from your own consumption, that a battery's typical lifespan is about 10 to 12 years, and that fitting storage at the same time as panels costs less than a separate visit later.
Residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027. Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee are set by each supplier and must be above zero — they change on short notice, which is why we never print one. Our own price comes from a survey of your usage, tariff and wiring, and arrives itemised — the battery, the inverter or hybrid unit, the network notification, commissioning and warranties as separate lines.
When we would tell you not to: if your evening usage is low, if your tariff gives you little difference between peak and off-peak, or if a smaller solar array would already cover what you use in daylight, a battery can take a long time to pay its way — and we will say so rather than sell you one.

Redhill battery questions
Can I fit a battery in a Redhill flat?
Only with the freeholder's or managing agent's consent, and usually not inside the flat itself. Flats are 36.9% of households in the two central Redhill wards (2021 Census), so we often look first for a private garage or plant space. In shared-ownership homes, the housing association's agreement is needed too.
Do I need to tell UK Power Networks about a battery?
Your installer does. Redhill is in UKPN's South Eastern Power Networks area. Systems up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) are notified within 28 days under G98; larger ones need G99 approval first. UKPN says it automatically approves applications with maximum export under 5 kW after any export limitation.
Does Article 4 affect a battery on my Redhill house?
It can affect anything fixed to the outside. Reigate & Banstead has served Article 4 directions on most of its conservation areas, which include Redhill town centre, Redstone Hill and St John's. A battery inside a garage or the house raises fewer questions; for an external unit on one of those streets, check with the council before work starts.
Will a battery keep my Redhill home running in a power cut?
Not by default. A standard grid-tied battery shuts down with the grid for safety. Backup needs extra isolation hardware and a choice of circuits to keep. We cost it separately so you can see whether it is worth having.
