If your Berkshire house already has solar panels, the first thing that separates one home battery from another is not capacity. It is design: whether the battery works alongside the inverter you have, replaces it, or needs a different model altogether. The second is consent, because a large share of Berkshire households rent or live in flats. The third is the warranty, which five manufacturers write in five different ways. This guide takes those three in turn for EnSmart batteries in Berkshire, Tesla Powerwall, Sigenergy SigenStor, EcoFlow PowerOcean and Fox ESS.
Plainly: the battery systems in HCE’s own job photos are EnSmart, and that is the range we fit. For the other four brands, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches. We do not rank the brands or price them here. The county page is solar panels in Berkshire, and sizing is covered on battery storage.
Hybrid, AC-coupled or a retrofit model
A hybrid inverter handles the solar panels and the battery in one unit. An AC-coupled battery sits beside an existing solar inverter and stores its surplus. The published designs:
- EnSmart pairs its ELV packs with the SolarAll-H hybrid inverter, which converts the panels’ output and manages battery charging in a single unit, with dual independent battery ports. On a house with an existing inverter, we assess the array and the wiring at survey.
- Tesla builds a solar inverter into the Powerwall 3, taking up to 20 kW of solar DC across 3 MPPT inputs, and also supports AC-coupled configurations that leave an existing inverter in place.
- Sigenergy’s original SigenStor is a hybrid: its Energy Controller is both solar and battery inverter. The add-on route Sigenergy describes for third-party inverters, the SigenStor Neo’s Smart Port, was not in the UK supply chain as of 16 September 2026.
- EcoFlow pairs its packs with a hybrid inverter, and its range includes a DC-retrofit model, PowerOcean DC Fit, for homes with existing solar.
- Fox ESS pairs its batteries with its own H1-G2 hybrid inverters, 3.0 to 6.0 kW, and offers the 7 to 10.5 kW KH series for larger homes.
One catch applies to any retrofit with backup: solar running through a third-party inverter will not necessarily keep generating into a backed-up home during an outage unless the design accounts for it.
Who has to agree first
Berkshire’s tenure varies sharply by borough. In Reading 31.9% of households rented privately at the 2021 Census, up from 26.1% in 2011, with a further 16.1% renting socially; a tenant needs the landlord’s written agreement before anything is fixed to the building. In the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead 20.0% of households live in purpose-built flats, and 22.5% in Maidenhead’s built-up area, so the freeholder or managing agent decides before any brand does. Wokingham sits at the other end, with 76.0% of households owning their home and 42.7% in detached houses. Bracknell Forest leans to terraces, at 28.8% of households, where an outdoor-rated unit is often the one assessed: IP55 with IP67 on the battery for the Powerwall 3, IP66 for the SigenStor, IP65 for the PowerOcean and Fox ESS’s EP5. EnSmart’s ELV-W wall pack is IP50 and stays indoors, while its ELV-F floor packs are IP55.
The warranty fine print, side by side
| Brand | Published term | What is promised at the end | Condition to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| EnSmart | ELV-W datasheet: 5-year product, 10-year performance | Exact terms confirmed in writing with the quote | The 15-year figure is a design life, not a warranty |
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | 10 years | 80% of capacity for UK installations | Bought from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer; registration and internet connection |
| Sigenergy SigenStor | 10 years on modules and inverter; DC EV module 3 years | 60% of usable energy, or a throughput cap, whichever first | Internet connection required for the full term |
| EcoFlow PowerOcean | 15 years | Daily use until 70% of original capacity | Registration and correct installation |
| Fox ESS | 10 years on EP-series, 12 on EQ towers | At least 70% of nominal energy, or a throughput cap | Inverter 10 years only with Fox Cloud connected within 120 days, otherwise 5 |
The throughput caps matter in a house that charges from solar by day and a cheap tariff overnight. Fox ESS’s cap on the EP11 is 38.85 MWh. At one full cycle a day a 10.36 kWh EP11 uses about 3.8 MWh a year, so the cap and the ten years arrive together; at two cycles a day the cap arrives in about five years (our arithmetic). Tesla’s unlimited-cycle cover is scoped to solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup, with other uses capped at 37.8 MWh.
Sizing to a Berkshire roof
PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array about 135 kWh in December at Maidenhead to 140 kWh at Windsor, and about 478 kWh (Reading) to 482 kWh (Windsor and Maidenhead) in June. That is roughly 4.4 to 4.5 kWh a day in December and 15.9 to 16.1 kWh in June (our arithmetic). A December day’s output fits in one 5.12 kWh EnSmart pack, a 5 kWh EcoFlow pack or a 5.18 kWh Fox ESS EP5. Sigenergy’s smallest module is 6.02 kWh, and a Powerwall 3 comes as one 13.5 kWh unit. Size to your own evening use, not to the roof.
One network: SSEN
Ascot, Bracknell, Wokingham, Windsor, Reading and Maidenhead town centres all sit in SSEN’s Southern Electric Power Distribution area; Reading’s is 24.6 km from another licence area. Equipment up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified under G98 within 28 days of commissioning; larger systems need G99 approval before work. A house with a three-phase supply can stay on G98 up to 11.04 kW, which covers Sigenergy’s 5.0 to 10.0 kW three-phase controllers. Ofgem’s 2024/25 figures for the area show about 41.8 supply interruptions per 100 customers and 51.2 minutes lost per customer, down from 51.3 and 57.6. None of the five brands provides backup unless it is designed and wired in.
