The brochure answer is a year count — ten years here, fifteen there. The truthful answer has three parts: what the manufacturer warrants, what the engineering is designed for, and what the battery actually does in your kitchen in year twelve. Those are different numbers, and buying well means knowing which one you are being quoted. Here is how long solar batteries really last, using the published terms of the systems we install — and the small print that decides more than the headline ever does.
Warranty, design life, working life — three different numbers
A warranty is a legal promise: the manufacturer will repair, replace or compensate if the battery falls below defined performance within a defined period. A design life is an engineering intention: what the product is built to survive. A working life is what happens in your home, which nobody can promise in advance.
The gap between the first two is best shown with a real example. EnSmart’s ELV-W battery packs — the wall-mounted lithium units its SolarAll systems pair with — publish a 15-year design life and more than 6,500 charge cycles. Those are design figures, not warranty terms: EnSmart does not publish a standalone warranty period for the packs, so the warranty on an EnSmart configuration is confirmed in writing at quote stage. A brochure that quietly promotes a design life into a “15-year battery” is rounding hope up into a promise — the distinction is exactly the kind of thing worth checking before money moves. All figures come from the manufacturers’ published UK and European product and warranty documents at the time of writing. Ranges change, which is why the current terms belong in writing with any real quote.
Whichever comes first: years, retention, throughput
A modern battery warranty has three limbs, and the least generous one wins.
The year count is the simple part: ten years is the norm among the lines above, with EcoFlow’s published 15 the outlier.
The retention promise is what the battery must still deliver at the end. More on that below.
The throughput or cycle cap is the limb most buyers never read. Sigenergy’s 6.02kWh module carries a minimum throughput figure of 20.44MWh against 5.84kWh of usable energy — divide one by the other and the warranty covers roughly 3,500 full-cycle equivalents. Cycle the battery once a day and that is about nine and a half years of cover, neatly in step with the ten-year term. But work it twice a day — filling it overnight on a cheap tariff and cycling it on solar, which is precisely what a smart household does — and the arithmetic halves. A throughput-capped warranty on a hard-working battery can expire years before the calendar says it should.
Tesla approaches the same problem from the other side: the Powerwall 3’s UK warranty allows unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup, applying its 37.8MWh aggregate throughput cap only to other applications. For a heavily cycled home battery, that distinction is worth real money.
And the cycle ratings themselves deserve context. EcoFlow’s packs are rated at 6,000-plus cycles — one full cycle a day for over sixteen years. That is why warranties are bounded by calendar years as well as cycles: batteries age with time as well as with work, and the manufacturers write their promises accordingly.
What retention actually means in your kitchen
Lithium batteries fade; they do not fail on a birthday. The retention line tells you the worst case the manufacturer will stand behind.
Take the Powerwall 3: 13.5kWh of capacity warranted at 80% for UK installations means Tesla promises at least 10.8kWh of it in year ten — a battery still doing genuinely useful evening work. Two practical readings follow. First, size with fade in mind: a battery that only just covers your evenings when new will fall short of them by the end of its warranty. Second, the retention floor is a minimum the manufacturer will remedy, not a forecast — many batteries do better. The warranty defines the downside, not the expectation.
The conditions that bite
The clauses that actually catch households out are rarely about electrochemistry:
- Connectivity. Sigenergy’s warranty places a system that stays offline for more than 90 days into a protective safe-operation mode, and adjusts the warranty to five years if the system is offline for more than a year cumulatively. Tesla requires a connection for the full ten years but commits to honouring at least four regardless. The router in your loft is now warranty infrastructure — treat it that way.
- Temperature. Sigenergy recommends a 10–30°C working range for its batteries, which is a concrete reason the siting conversation at survey stage matters: a sheltered garage wall and a south-facing external wall in a heatwave are different homes for a battery.
- Registration and the app. Monitoring apps — mySigen among them — double as the warranty claim channel. Set up on day one, while the installer is standing there.
None of these conditions is hidden, exactly. They live in the document rather than the advert — so ask any installer, us included, to put the actual warranty document in front of you before you sign. The brochure is marketing; the warranty is the contract.
What determines life beyond the warranty
Past the term, the same levers keep operating. A battery sized so that one daily cycle covers your evening usage sits comfortably inside every cap in the table above; one worked flat-out against a smart tariff earns more per year and ages faster per year, which is a legitimate trade to make deliberately. Siting and temperature keep mattering after year ten just as before it.
Chemistry is worth a line of honesty too. Sigenergy, EcoFlow and EnSmart all publish lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the chemistry of their battery packs. Tesla’s UK datasheet for the Powerwall 3 does not state a chemistry — so, unlike some comparison sites, we do not claim one for it. What the published documents support is the paragraph above: fade is gradual, promises are bounded, and the battery in year twelve is a smaller version of the one you bought, not a dead one.
Batteries, panels and inverters age on different clocks
The rest of the system runs to different timescales, and the mismatch is a feature of solar ownership worth planning rather than discovering. Solar panels are designed to last 25 to 30 years. Inverter warranties typically run around 5 to 12 years. Battery warranties, as above, run 10 to 15. A system bought today may therefore see one battery replacement and one inverter replacement inside the panels’ lifetime — and a quote that acknowledges that is more honest than one that lets you assume everything expires together.
One thing you will never hear from us: “lifetime guarantee”. No manufacturer we install warrants a battery for life, and any brochure implying it is quoting hope rather than terms.
Choosing on lifespan: the short checklist
- Compare retention promises and caps, not year counts alone — ten years at 80% and ten years at 60% are different products.
- Ask how the throughput cap interacts with your intended use, especially if you plan to charge overnight and cycle daily.
- Get the connectivity and temperature conditions in front of you, and site the battery accordingly.
- Ask what the written warranty for the exact configuration says — particularly on EnSmart systems, where terms are confirmed per configuration.
