EV Charger Installation Horley
Home EV chargers for Horley driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Horley is usually a drive-and-garage job on a fairly new house. In the three Horley wards, 33.8% of households lived in semis and 28.2% in detached houses at the 2021 Census, and the Horley Master Plan has added Westvale Park, with 1,130 homes occupied by May 2022, and The Acres beside Langshott. A modern consumer unit near a garage or drive keeps the cable run short. Across Reigate and Banstead, DVLA counts 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles at the end of June 2026, against 4,051 a year earlier. Our home EV charger installation page explains the SmartBee-M we fit and how grants work.
With 70.4% of Horley households owning their home, most can pair a charger with panels without asking anyone. See what solar panels in Horley would generate on your roof, and whether battery storage in Horley is worth adding for the evenings.
Quick answer
EV charger installation in Horley:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Horley is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Reigate and Banstead (2026 Q2), up from 4,051 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.

Where a charger goes in Horley's homes
The 2021 Census counted 12,436 households across Horley Central & South, Horley East & Salfords and Horley West & Sidlow: 33.8% semi-detached, 28.2% detached, 14.5% terraced and 19.5% in purpose-built flats (ONS Census 2021, TS044 and TS054). On a Westvale Park or The Acres house, the charger usually goes on the garage or front wall by the drive; where parking sits in a shared court away from the house, the cable route is longer and the survey prices it. In the older semis of Court Lodge and Meath Green, a side wall by the drive generally works. Owner-occupiers of houses get no OZEV grant: the scheme that covered them closed in April 2022.
The 14.5% in terraces without a drive face Surrey County Council's rule against trailing cables across the pavement; its cable gully scheme with Kerbo Charge offers a covered channel for £499 where the footway and parking qualify. On the Edwardian villas of Massetts Road, and in the Church Road and Meath Green conservation areas, Reigate & Banstead's Article 4 directions mean a unit fixed to a front wall is worth checking with the council first. Flat owners and the 16.6% who rent privately need freeholder or landlord consent, and shared owners (2.8%) the housing association's; with private or allocated parking they can get up to £500, claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Horley
Horley is in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks licence area, and the installer deals with UKPN for you. A 7 kW charger draws 32 A for as long as it charges, and most homes have a 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse. The survey checks yours, whether in Westvale Park or Horley Row, and load management covers most tight cases. UK Power Networks says there is no charge from it where no upgrade is needed, and that it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 A to 80 or 100 A where one is. Through UKPN's Smart Connect service, approved installers can notify a chargepoint within 28 days for houses up to 69 kVA whose supply can take it.
Every new home chargepoint has had to be smart since 30 June 2022, so it can follow an off-peak tariff or, with a compatible set-up, divert solar surplus. PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array in Horley about 491 kWh in June, roughly 16.4 kWh a day; after a typical household's 6.8 kWh a day, at least about 9.5 kWh is left for the car on an average June day (our arithmetic). A 4 kWp array never reaches 7 kW, so solar-only charging runs below the charger's rated speed, and in December (about 138 kWh) most charging comes from the grid.
Can a Horley roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Horley for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 491 kWh in June and about 138 kWh in December, 4,021 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.5 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Horley
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Horley home arrives itemised after a survey.

Horley EV charger questions
Can I add a charger to a new-build house at Westvale Park?
Usually, yes. Newer homes tend to have modern consumer units close to a garage or drive, which keeps the job simple. Where parking sits in a shared court away from the house, the cable route is longer and the survey prices it. On a leasehold or shared-ownership home, you will need the freeholder's or housing association's agreement first.
Will my Horley fuse take a 7 kW charger?
Most will. The charger draws 32 A and main fuses are commonly 60 A, 80 A or 100 A, with load management for tighter cases. UK Power Networks says it can upgrade a main fuse from 30 or 60 A to 80 or 100 A, and charges nothing where no upgrade is needed.
Can solar charge my car in Horley in winter?
Only a little. PVGIS gives a 4 kWp south-facing array in Horley about 138 kWh in December, about 4.5 kWh a day, against about 491 kWh in June (our arithmetic). In winter the house uses most of that, so the car charges mainly overnight on an off-peak tariff.
Is there a grant for a charger in Reigate and Banstead?
Not for an owner-occupier of a house with a drive. Flat owners and renters with private or allocated parking can get 75% of the cost up to £500, and on-street households up to £500 with an approved cross-pavement solution, both to 31 March 2027. Claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage.
