EV Charger Installation Reigate
Home EV chargers for Reigate driveways, garages and, where the council allows it, on-street homes, with the supply check, the grant position and the solar pairing explained before anything is fitted.
EV charger installation in Reigate is mostly a driveway job. Across Reigate and Banstead, 17,720 households live in semi-detached houses and 16,679 in detached ones (Census 2021), the two largest groups, and in South Park, Woodhatch or Reigate Heath a charger normally goes on a garage or side wall by the drive. DVLA records 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the borough at the end of June 2026, up from 4,051 a year earlier. The charger we fit is the EnSmart SmartBee-M, and our home EV charger installation guide covers speeds, smart charging and the grant picture.
With roughly 70% of the borough in the Green Belt, new solar around Reigate mostly means rooftops, and a roof can feed a car as well as a house. Quick answer
EV charger installation in Reigate:
- Speed: a 7 kW home charger adds roughly 7 kWh an hour, so a typical day's driving is back in the battery well inside an overnight window.
- Supply: a 7 kW charger draws about 32 A continuously; the survey checks your main fuse and consumer unit first, and load management is the usual answer on a smaller supply.
- Grid: central Reigate is on UK Power Networks's South Eastern Power Networks network; the charger is notified to the operator as part of the job.
- Local uptake: DVLA records about 5,110 privately kept plug-in vehicles across Reigate and Banstead (2026 Q2), up from 4,051 a year earlier.
- Grants: up to £500 for eligible flat owner-occupiers and renters, and a £500 cross-pavement route for on-street parking, both to 31 March 2027; claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495) and a HIES Consumer Code member; the charger in our own job photos is the EnSmart SmartBee-M.
Figures: GOV.UK (OZEV chargepoint grants, to 31 March 2027) · Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VEH0142 (2026 Q2) · PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre). Eligibility depends on your circumstances.
How an EV charger gets fitted in Reigate
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1

Where a charger goes in Reigate's homes
The borough's 9,596 terraced households (Census 2021) are concentrated nearer the town centre, where many have no drive. Surrey County Council, the highway authority here, does not allow a cable across the pavement, so the route is a cable gully. Check suitability with Kerbo Charge first, then apply to the council and pay the £499 subsidised fee; the council inspects the site, normally within 4 weeks, and its contractor aims to install within 6 weeks. If the site proves unsuitable, the council may refund £399 at its discretion. After a two-year warranty, keeping the gully costs £4.99 a month to Kerbo Charge from year three. OZEV offers up to £500 towards a chargepoint fitted with an approved cross-pavement solution.
71.1% of Reigate and Banstead households own their home and 15.7% rent privately (Census 2021), and 12,839 households live in purpose-built flats. Renters need the landlord's written agreement; flat owners need the freeholder's consent for a charger on an allocated bay. Both can get OZEV's grant of 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, with private off-street or allocated parking, and the claim must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage. Owners of houses get no grant. Reigate's town centre is a conservation area and Article 4 directions cover most of the borough's conservation areas, so a charger on a street-facing wall there, or on a listed house, is a question for the council before it is fitted.
Your supply, the grid and smart charging in Reigate
Reigate's town centre is well inside UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks area, about 15.6 km from the next licence area, so RH2 chargepoints are notified to UK Power Networks by your installer, often through its Smart Connect service; for a house whose supply can take the load, notification within 28 days of installation is all it asks. A 7.4 kW charger, the usual 7 kW home unit, draws 32 A continuously, and most homes have a 60 A, 80 A or 100 A main fuse. Load management usually keeps a charger within that. Where it cannot, UK Power Networks says it can raise a 30 or 60 A main fuse to 80 or 100 A, and that a looped supply shared with a neighbour must be re-planned with both households and may carry a charge.
Smart functionality has been the law for every new home chargepoint sold in Great Britain since 30 June 2022, so the car can be set to charge in the cheapest hours. With a compatible setup, surplus solar can be diverted into it as well. PVGIS estimates a 4 kWp south-facing array in Reigate makes about 492 kWh in June, roughly 16.4 kWh a day and about 137 kWh in December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day (our arithmetic). At the October to December 2026 price-cap rate of 26.32p per kWh, a 60 kWh charge costs about £15.79 (our arithmetic on the average capped rate); off-peak EV tariffs price overnight units well below that.
Can a Reigate roof charge the car?
We ran the European Commission's PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre) for Reigate for a 4 kWp array at 35° facing due south. It estimates about 492 kWh in June and about 137 kWh in December, 4,033 kWh across the year.
Our arithmetic on those figures: June works out at roughly 16 kWh a day and December at roughly 4.4 kWh a day, before the house takes its share. In summer a solar-matched charger can put a useful part of a commute back into the car from the roof; in midwinter it will mostly charge on a cheap overnight rate instead. A smart charger handles both, which is why we set the schedule around your tariff, not around the sunniest month.
Method: PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), 4 kWp, 35° tilt, due south, 14% system losses, building-mounted, PVGIS-SARAH3, 2005–2023. Daily figures are our own division of the monthly estimate, not a survey result.

EV charger grants and cost in Reigate
Grant funding is narrower than many older articles suggest. On GOV.UK, renters and flat owner-occupiers with private off-street parking can get up to £500 (or 75% of the cost, whichever is lower) towards a chargepoint, and households with on-street parking only have a separate route of up to £500 for a charger installed with an approved cross-pavement solution. Both run until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in houses with driveways do not qualify.
Grant claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer, so tell us your situation at the quote stage and we will say plainly whether a grant applies before any figures are agreed. Chargepoints carry VAT at the standard rate. The price itself is built from the charger, a dedicated circuit, the cable route to where you park, any load-management device and the network notification; our EV charger installation cost guide sets those items out, and our quote for your Reigate home arrives itemised after a survey.

Reigate EV charger questions
Can I get a charger at a Reigate terrace with on-street parking?
Through a Surrey County Council cable gully, if your street suits one. Kerbo Charge checks suitability first, then you apply to the council with the £499 subsidised fee; the council inspects, normally within 4 weeks, and may refund £399 at its discretion if the site proves unsuitable. The council notes that a charger without off-street parking may need planning permission, so check with Reigate and Banstead too.
Will my Reigate fuse take a 7 kW charger?
Usually. A 7.4 kW charger draws 32 A continuously and most main fuses are 60 A, 80 A or 100 A, so load management normally covers it. UK Power Networks says it can upgrade a 30 or 60 A main fuse to 80 or 100 A where needed, and your installer makes the request. A looped supply shared with a neighbour has to be re-planned with both households.
Is there a grant for a charger in Reigate and Banstead?
Not for owners of houses, who make up most of the borough. Renters and people who own and live in flats can get 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, with private off-street or allocated parking, and on-street households can get up to £500 with an approved cross-pavement solution. Claims must be made through an OZEV-authorised installer; tell us your situation at the quote stage. The charger itself carries 20% VAT.
Can solar charge my car in Reigate in winter?
Very little. PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing array in Reigate at about 137 kWh in December, roughly 4.4 kWh a day, against about 492 kWh in June (our arithmetic). In winter, charge overnight on an off-peak tariff; in summer, a car at home in daylight can take a good share from the roof with a compatible setup.
