Tesla Powerwall in Surrey
What Tesla Powerwall means for a Surrey home, how it compares with the systems we fit, and a written answer on supply, installation and warranty if it is the one you want.
Most questions about a Tesla Powerwall 3 in Surrey start in a detached or semi-detached house. At the 2021 Census 32.2% of Surrey households lived in detached houses and 29.2% in semis, so a garage or utility room is often there for a 130 kg battery. This page covers how the Powerwall fits that housing, the two networks that handle the grid paperwork, and what Surrey’s own solar and plug-in car figures say. For the roof side, see solar panels in Surrey; for how storage works whatever the brand, our battery storage guide; and for town detail, battery storage in Guildford, Camberley or Reigate.
Before any quote, two plain facts. The battery system in HCE’s own job photos is EnSmart; if a Powerwall 3 is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches. That question carries more weight with Tesla than with most brands, because Tesla’s warranty applies to a Powerwall that “was purchased from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer”, and it lists installation or commissioning by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla certified installer among the grounds on which cover may be voided. Check any Surrey company that quotes you, HCE included, against Tesla’s own certified-installer finder, and read the full cost and warranty picture on our Tesla Powerwall 3 cost page.
Quick answer
Tesla Powerwall in Surrey:
- Our own work: the battery systems in HCE's own job photos are EnSmart; if Tesla Powerwall is what you want, ask us and we will confirm in writing how it would be supplied, who installs and commissions it, and what warranty attaches.
- Cost: the Energy Saving Trust puts home battery storage at £1,500 to £10,000, with a 5 kWh system at around £4,600; a quote for your home comes from a survey of your usage.
- VAT: residential battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.
- Grid: every battery is notified to, or approved by, the local network operator depending on its size (G98 or G99); the installer handles it.
- Power cuts: a standard grid-tied battery shuts down when the grid does; backup has to be designed in and is never assumed.
- Who fits it: HCE is a NAPIT member (73495), MCS-certified for solar PV and battery storage via NAPIT, and a HIES Consumer Code member.

How a home battery gets fitted in Surrey
Four steps from first call to switch-on. No pressure at any stage, and a straight answer if it would not pay its way.
- Step 1
Your usage, not a guess
We look at when your Surrey home uses power, especially evenings, and your tariff, because that, not the sunniest month, decides the battery size.
- Step 2
Sizing and siting
Where the unit can go (garage, utility room or an outside wall, as the manufacturer allows), whether it pairs with existing panels, and a written, itemised quote.
- Step 3
Installation and notification
Fitting and commissioning, with the battery notified to or approved by your network operator depending on its size. Backup in a power cut only if it is designed in.
- Step 4
Settings and handover
Charge and discharge set up around your tariff, the app explained, and the warranty documents in your hand.
How Tesla Powerwall fits Surrey homes
Surrey’s house-led stock suits the Powerwall’s format. Tesla’s UK datasheet gives the unit as 1105 × 609 × 193 mm and 130 kg, floor or wall mounted: a two-person lift whose position is settled at survey, not on the day. In Surrey Heath, where 43.7% of households live in detached houses, or the Virginia Water ward at 50.3% (Census 2021), an integral garage close to the consumer unit is usually the first place to look. The enclosure is rated IP55, with IP67 on the battery and power electronics, and it runs from −20°C to 50°C, so an outside side wall also works; in a conservation area such as Farnham’s town centre, keep any outdoor unit off the street-facing elevation and check with the council first. The harder Surrey homes are flats: 36.9% of households in the two Redhill wards live in purpose-built flats, and a 130 kg unit there needs the freeholder’s consent and a space that is genuinely yours.
Surrey splits between two network operators. Most of the town centres on our Surrey pages, Guildford, Reigate, Epsom and Dorking among them, sit in UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks area, while the town centres of Farnham, Camberley, Haslemere and Egham are in SSEN’s Southern Electric Power Distribution area; Godalming, Staines-upon-Thames and Virginia Water lie within 2 km of the line between them. Check your own address with the Energy Networks Association’s postcode tool. On either network the Powerwall’s output setting decides the paperwork: the datasheet lists settings from 3.68 kW to 11.04 kW, and under G98 a system up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW) is notified within 28 days of commissioning, while anything larger needs a G99 approval before work starts. For a large detached house that wants the full 11.04 kW, that approval is what sets the start date.
Surrey: sunshine, the grid and local uptake
PVGIS puts a 4 kWp south-facing array across the 22 Surrey towns we cover at between about 130 kWh (Guildford) and 140 kWh (Cranleigh and Dorking) in December, and between about 479 kWh (Camberley) and 501 kWh (Cranleigh) in June. Godalming is the exception in December: its town-centre point sits in the Wey valley, where PVGIS’s terrain horizon cuts it to about 74 kWh; homes on higher ground or with an open southern view do better. Elsewhere that is roughly 4.2 to 4.5 kWh a day in December against 16.0 to 16.7 kWh a day in June (our arithmetic). In June the average day’s output exceeds the Powerwall’s 13.5 kWh before the house uses any of it; in December it covers about a third, so how a Powerwall charges in winter is a tariff question rather than a solar one.
DESNZ records 32,212 solar PV installations of every size across the 11 Surrey councils behind those towns at the end of 2025, and DVLA counts 45,040 privately kept plug-in vehicles across the same councils at the end of June 2026, up from 34,861 a year earlier (both our sums). Ofgem’s 2024/25 figures show about 42.2 supply interruptions per 100 customers and 30.4 minutes lost per customer for South Eastern Power Networks, and 41.8 and 51.2 for Southern Electric Power Distribution, against 39.7 and 35.1 across all 14 GB licence areas. A Powerwall only supplies the house during an outage when a Backup Gateway 2 is part of the design.

Tesla Powerwall in Surrey: questions
Can a Powerwall 3 go in the garage of a Surrey semi?
Usually, and it is often the best spot. At 1105 × 609 × 193 mm and 130 kg it can stand on the floor or hang on a wall, and a garage keeps it out of living space and close to the consumer unit. Its IP55 enclosure also allows an outside side wall. A loft is not a default for a 130 kg unit: weight, temperature and service access all have to check out under Tesla’s installation manual first.
Which network operator handles a Powerwall application in Surrey?
It depends on your address. Most central and eastern Surrey town centres are on UK Power Networks’ South Eastern area, and the west, including Farnham and Camberley, is on SSEN’s Southern Electric Power Distribution area. Use the Energy Networks Association’s postcode tool to check yours. A Powerwall set at 3.68 kW or less is notified under G98; a higher setting needs a G99 approval before work starts. The installer submits the paperwork.
Does it matter who sells me a Powerwall in Surrey?
Yes. Tesla’s warranty covers a Powerwall bought from Tesla or a Tesla certified installer, and installation or commissioning by anyone else is listed among the grounds on which cover may be voided. The ten years, with 80% of capacity retained for UK installations, also depends on registration and an internet connection. Check Tesla’s certified-installer finder, and ask every company quoting you, us included, to confirm the supply route and warranty in writing.
Will a Powerwall 3 keep my Surrey home running in a power cut?
Only if it is installed with a Backup Gateway 2. In Tesla’s non-backup configuration, which uses a Tesla Remote Meter instead, the system provides no backup power during an outage. With the Gateway you choose whole-home backup or nominated circuits. Say at the survey whether outage cover matters to you, because it is the biggest single difference between two Powerwall quotes.
